1991 - 1999 (E36) (1991 - 1999) The first modern 3 Series, the E36, was the model that paved the way for the 3 Series to be named "Car of the Year" every year since the model was driving off showroom floors. Radically redesigned in 1992, the E36 was not the same 3 Series as the E21 and E30. Larger, less boxy in design, and equipped with a dual overhead cam engine, multilink rear suspension, and a more finished interior, the E36 balances sport with luxury.

So my cousin comes over with a new bmw...

She asks whose bmw is in the driveway, I say its mine, and she says "you wanna see mine " with a devilish smile.
I'm thinking she has a new 3 series, seeing that tons of girls in NY have them.
All I had to see was the tail lights of the 6 series for me to turn away fuming with jealousy lol.
Of course I ask to drive it and wow....from the moment I put the key in and the car gives off that angelic chime, I'm motivated to get $$ and own one.
The car was just gorgeous. drop top 650i with chrome rims (22s, didn't like them but it was hard to care), champagne color (can't remember the actual name of the color). The sound system was surprisingly loud and bassy for a stock bmw system. The couple times I pushed her (the car not my cousin) I had to make sure I didn't let myself get out of control bc I was on side streets here in Nassau county. It was an abovetheinfluence.com commercial waiting to happen. I found it kind of ridiculous that I had to hold the convertible top buttons, but can't complain about not having to get out of the car to drop the top.
Opened the throttle and it made my e36 feel like the last bicycle I owned.

Moral of the story, the 650i is bmw's version of a lap dance from Scarlett Johanssen. And I somehow came out of the experience appreciating my e36 328i a little more. Possibly bc its been off the road since last sept.

Just wanted to share that amazing ride with the few people who would care.

Anyone care to share story of driving a higher up Bimmer so this thread isn't so pointless?

The first time I drove my chipped e34 535 it felt much faster than my e30 325e. Driving my pop's e39 M5 was quite the experience. The e36 was a small step down from the e39. The only reason why I have it is because the e39 had disgusting gas mileage.

Oh yea, driving my friend's 6 was amazing as well. Too bad it is an automatic though.

My dad brings home company cars - all new BMWs. I'm 17, and therefore uninsured on those vehicles, so I get to stare all day long at just about any BMW imaginable, but can't drive it. Right now he has a Performance BMW 335i. I turn 18 in less than two months .

And you will still be uninsured to drive those vehicles!

I've driven an F430 and had the experience once to drive a Saleen S7, and after that I have been disappointed with every vehicle I drive.

My brother has a Z4 M that also puts me to shame. Really makes me wish I went to school for finance and been an investment banker, so I can invest in poor personal choices!

if I can find a mint 850i from the states, and I am sure there are a few, I will take it in a heart-beat if/when I will ever get a chance to own one. They are simply georgeous. I know it was not a popular series, but.....it is a club unto itself....

I don't think I will find bad ones on Autotrader.com, but I can't afford one just yet......

Where I am in NY, there have recently been 5 of them up for sale......

The lowest priced one was $9,500 and the higest was $18,000.....75,000 miles......which, considering I've seen people pay that much for a M3, isn't that bad at all.....

That one I drove has 34,000 miles on it

When I read "drop top 650i," I thought to myself, "Oh wow, a e24 vert with a swapped motor." Then I remembered the new 6 series and I got sad.

I try to like the new 6, and while I do respect it's capabilities, I just can't like the styling. It's ugly.

The E24 rivets me every time I see one, love the late 635CSi... May still get one someday. The new 6 will never stir the soul that way, at least not without getting behind the wheel.

I've always been a fan of the E31 too. And they are indeed affordable these days. To buy, not to fix. I'd love to own a mint E24 or a mint E31... tons of personality and capable vehicles in their own right. The 850 still looks interesting up against any new car, and 12 cylinders is such fun smoooooth power...

I don't own an E36 but I came across this thread and had to share.

I've owned 3 BMWs, consisting of two E34s and an E46 but after I worked at a BMW dealership for a summer, I realized what life is all about. It made me motivated to achieve wealth because driving a BMW is true happiness. I definitely agreed with the OPs description about the chime. You don't forget that sound!

6s can look good when modded cleanly, but stock they look horrible.

The next 6 is going to bring back the shark look hopefully. The proportions are wrong but something like this would be cool:

Please, dear God, I hope they don't offer it with Audi LED lights. I like it. IT needs to grow on me more though.

Would smash, twice.

Please let this be a true design and not something out of the imagination of a designer.

I have drove a 02 540i automatic, very touchy but quick. I think it's ugly. Didn't like it.

I have also drove a 06 528i & 328i also automatic, they were, well kind of but not really
quick, but they look good.

The best bmw I have drove though is a 06 335i with paddle shifters..now that thing was fun!

I don't understand why it's always the damn automatics I drive though..

I'm looking into getting a new car after I sell the vert. I've narrowed it down to a X5 4.8is or a 550i with paddle shifters
There's a mod for the X5 where you add a M steering wheel with paddle shifters and wire it over and you can use the paddles.
