DIY Day on my E39
Fresh off a rebuilt trans I decided to take care of some other projects on the car.
I started the Headlight retoration and it did not come out perfect but they are alot clearer than before. I also replaced Outdoor Air Temp Sensor due to it being damaged. I just found that I have play in my water pump pully, the damn pump was replaced in Nov. 2007 or 25K miles ago along with hoses, t-stat, belt driven fan / t-stat and the electric fan. So do I replace all hoses again since I am in there or just the pump... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

It only gets better, after I ordered all the parts I need for the weekend from Jared @ EAC I went to go get some shop supplies and I popped the radiator.
This shitt really pisses me off, the fact of the matter is that the original cooling system was in great shape @ 172,000 miles and I was convinced by XXXXX MOTORS BMW in MIAMI to overhaul all of the complete components due to age and mileage. So I bit at the recommendation of my service advisor and spent the $1,600.00 to do the complete overhaul (pump, t-stat all hoses) Fast forward 25,000 miles and 22 months and I have all of these parts failing and XXXXX Motors (with a straight face) says out of warranty, 12,000 miles or 12 months and there are not willing to offer any consideration for repair. NOTE TO SELF: For now on if I ever end up in a service line at BMW and a repair is suggested on a perfectly good operating component I will jack slap that service writer in to the 22nd century.... Sorry for the rant, just really pissed off.

"Replace everything" they say... yeah, okay, let me jump on that. It's their replacement radiators that need changing every 12K miles, mine's been fine for the past 100K Ive learn to take these forums with a huge grain of salt, how couldnt I when a n00b calls me an idiot for having original cooling on my car... fvkin n00b ![]()

A cooling system is only as strong as it's weakest part. And usually when something goes, it takes other parts with it. In that respect, there is nothing wrong with doing an entire cooling system overhaul. Now just replacing parts to do it is nutty.

OP - In case you haven't already stumbled on what the motor mounts have to do with the cooling system, those V8s can rock around quite a bit on bad motor mounts. This causes a lot of stress on the various parts connected to the engine (radiator hoses) and can lead to all kinds of bad times down the road. In extreme cases the engine will actually jump up a bit and the cooling fan will slice the upper radiator hose. From what I have read on popped radiators, they often fail at the top, near the connection point for the upper radiator hose. This would be consistent with bad motor mounts. Motor mounts are cheap, and there is a DIY on this forum that doesn't look too bad. You should add them to your DIY day. Transmission mounts as well.

Motor and trans mounts were done at 172K miles and then again at trans rebuild.
The radiator popped on the drivers plastic end tank about half way down and looks like a molding defect on the front side. I had to use an inspection mirroer to see it, look like that dudes belly in Alien when the little creature popped out. Now about just replacing parts, what does that mean? at 172K miles every hose pump and accesories to the cooling system was replaced. Now I am doing every hose pump and t stat again, this time zionsville radiator.

There is usually nothing wrong with just changing parts that are broken on these cars, if your water pump went out, there isn't any problem with just changing it out as well as just the radiator. As for your hoses and t-stat, they should be in good condition. I would just fix it as it comes, no complete overhaul is needed since it was just done. The radiator in my car has been replace in 03 and so far its got no problems - knock on wood - and its an OE Behr replacement.

Don't get too annoyed yet. Talk to the service manager. Ours in Charleston is really good. The service manager is the only one who can make the change.
