What to look for in a 92 M3?

Hi,

Got back from my deployment and leave so now I'm back in the market for a used car. Looking at a 92 Euro-spec M3 that a guy I know is selling because he will be deploying in Dec. It has 220k KM's on the engine. It seems like it burns some oil and the engine check light comes on every once in a while and goes away. The car has a bad alignment because it goes to the left when I take my hands off.

I borrowed the car a year again when I needed a bigger car to drive my visiting parents to Rome and Florence. It had the 1000 KM road trip with dealing Rome's traffic without a problem.

I just need the car until summer of 2010. I do frequent 500-1000 km road trips to Germany and other parts of Europe. The car has got new tires (non performance).

The price is $2000. I'm not looking to do trackdays with it. Just need it for about another 20,000 km's. Will there be any likely problems that lays ahead?

I would deal with the alignment before buying it so you can eliminate any more severe mechanical issues that may cause the pulling to the left. I would also find out what the check engine light is for since that will give you a good idea of any major problems.

When you say burns oil, do you mean it consumes some oil between changes or does it visibly smoke from the exhaust? If the former, how much, if the latter, when and how much? A compression test (or better yet a leakdown test) is probably in order.

Add to that list normal upkeep costs including a tune up, potentially bushings, clutch, etc...

E30 M3 production ended in December of 1990. There was a short 1991 model year (06/90-12/90). There was no 1992 M3, either in E30 or E36 form.

E30: MY 1986-1991
E36: MY 1993-1999
E46: MY 2001-2006
E9X: MY 2008-present

Note: there is always one model year gap in M3 model years - those years are 1992, 2000, and 2007. There are no 1992, 2000, or 2007 M3s (except for concept cars, which technically don't have model years anyway).

I would assume the printed manufacture date is late 1992 which has been mistaken for the model year. The title likely says 1993.
