Z3 (E36/7, E36/8) (1996 - 2002) In 1996 BMW added the Z3 to the lineup. First available only with the 1.9 liter engine, the Z3 went on to carry every 6 cylinder produced between 1996 and 2002. A fun, sporty little 2 seater came both in convertible and coupe form. Being a bit of a “parts bin” car, the Z3 is part E30, part E36, but all original.

Changing color of the coupe

I am seriously considering a color change on the coupe this winter among various other mods. I am leaning heavily toward the 95 M3 GT British Racing green.

What do you think?

Maybe throw some CCW's on her if I can swing it...

I think your Coupe looks great the way it is. I'd stick with it. I dislike color changes...I don't think I could even explain why though. I guess because as a buyer, I'd be leary of a car with a different color than it came from the factory with. I don't care much for green either...just my 2¢ though. Do what you like man!

I get what your saying but I already have swapped the engine and seam welded the rear end of the car so I am far from factory spec as it is. If I do change colors it will be an engine out job and will be far superior to the factory paint. All depends on how much I spend on half cage / suspension work, etc in the next few months.

What kind of shape is your paint in as it sits now?

You make a very good point. An all in job like that would actually be quite appealing with the other improvements you have made to your car. You know you want LSB though.

How long do you plan to own the car? If it's forever, or for at least another 10 years, then paint it what ever color you want. But I agree with Z3Couper, it usually devalues your car on resale.

My paint is a 9.5 out of 10. I get bored with cars easy and I have been toying with selling her to get a 964 RS America...I love LSB wouldnt be a bad choice either.

If I embark on a respray I will be stripped of everything and done properly. I am talking a Councours' show winning job, not a quick color change. I will do all of the work myself save for the actual painting of the car as I don't have quite the skill needed to make it perfect.

Still not sold on going for it yet, just thinking out loud to you guys on the board.

Your car is amazing as it is! I would not change the color since it is already in great condition but there is no doubt it would look awesome in british racing green with ccws.

Not the performance or fun I have in the car, just on a looks perspective. I have been working with tons of older MINT 911's and other cars that have single stage paint jobs and there is something so cool about the patina of a non metallic paint...Just stirs the soul a little.

If you're paint is at 9.5 I wouldn't even consider spending thousands on a repaint. I always thought that the black M coupes look the part as well. If you are into LSB I would look into a project that was really rough like that '02 in Craigslist that was being discussed in this forum over the weekend. That car seriously needs money thrown at it, whereas it appears yours is far from that.........

Another no to the repaint. I like BRG on MGs and the like, and that's what I painted the Dutton, but black is a perfect color for the coupe, and I'm not just saying that because I have a Cosmos roadster. It's also an easier color to sell, if and when you go for that 968; a friend of mine recently referred to a car as "resale-proof green," and he has a point.

I wouldn't trade black for green, much less going through the hassle of a repaint.

Your mods have already killed the "original" resale value, so as you pointed out, that point is moot. Change the color if you want. You already say you will do a tear down anyway, so go for it if you want. As much as I like BRGreen, I don't think it would work on the coupe. If it were mine, I'd do fly yellow or guards red, but that's me.

If you are bored with it now, a new paint job might last you a year? It's going to cost more than $10K to do it right. I'd just sell it and by something else. Car prices are rock bottom right now. A low mile 10 year old v12 Ferrari might be nice to consider. Just saying

I think it would look great on your car, but man, it would be so hard for me to change the entire color if the paint was already 9.5 out of 10.

I will have to agree with what most people are saying here. If your paint is in that great of shape, I would skip on the repaint. If you really want it that bad though, nothing can stop you and your choices though. For me, if you did it, I would applaud you. I've always wanted to see a Z3 coupe/roadster in BRG. When I had my 325, the clear coat was peeling badly on the roof and hood, so I resprayed mine to BRG and I never regretted it since. I sold the car to a friend and I do miss it. BRG looked damn good on my 325 and I have no doubt that it will do the same on your coupe.

Thanks for the input guys! I think I am going to hold off on the respray and save some money or put it into my house. I will be adding a halfcage new seats and hopefully new wheels by springtime. Also going to add the IE camber and toe kit while I'm at it.

Paint it to color you like. You have already done so much modifications that it is easier to paint this car than buy car with right paint and then redoing all the modifications. I dont think it will affect resale values so much, after all these cars are not quite exotics or number matching historic cars or alike where it matters. For right buyer it can actually be more interesting when it has motorsport paint and motorsport engine and other mods.

But ofcourse who thinks about ever selling the coupe anyway. Just do it!
