1 Series (E81, E82, E87, E88) A generous bonnet, a long wheelbase and short overhangs are typically associated with sports cars. Here they make it clear that the BMW 1 Series is similarly dedicated to driving pleasure.

Lobbying for the E87

Okay, I'm brand new to this forum and 1 series communication. Don't scalp me yet. From what I've been reading here and on other BMW forums, a lot of posters like the looks, the specs and the idea of the 1 series E87. This is the striking looking 3 or 5 door hatchback unavailable in the U.S., but apparently number three in BMW sales worldwide. I like it too, and the more I learn about it, the better it seems: great handling, several engine options, wonderful utility (especially the 5-door), only rear-wheel-drive hatchback around, amazingly good fuel economy with 2 liter gas engine, reasonable price in its other markets. There are a few in the U.S.- visitors from Mexico, some diplomats' cars, maybe some being evaluated by BMWUSA. This car seems SO right for OUR country right now- I want to lobby BMW to bring this car here. Who would care to join in such an effort? R&T says BMW is bringing the 2 liter four cylinder engine to the States; this car is where it belongs! I say we need to start a serious petition. Does anyone else see this car the way I do, and want one more than just posting a sentence on this forum? I'd like to hear.

I've wanted a 5 door 123d since first reading about it. Heck, let them shoehorn a 135d i there to really watch the car fly, and still get low 40s in terms of mpgs.

I am not sure if this will work, but if you start a petition, I will throw my vote in even if the car is not on mu shopping list (a bit small as a family car). However I always loved its looks since it was launched in Europe and would love to see more of it around. Get the ball rolling, you never know, BMW may be in a listening mood with the current economic situation.

To Get The Ball Rolling

Thanks for the replies so far. Mr Moderator, given your Forum experience, has anyone else done this on Bimmerforums?- that is start a petition to the manufacturer, or anyone else for that matter? Since the 1 Series section is so tiny, would it be possible to post my same initial notice on other series threads to gain wider exposure- without getting "towed?" I'm open to your advice.

You should not cross post. However, you can post it in the General section to get wider appeal, but be ready for both positive and negative comment.
I don't recall seeing a similar attempt in the past, at least not for such a cause. I would suggest keeping it simple by choosing the poll option in the post with a simple yes/no and checking the box the makes votes public, that way you can tally results at the end without bothering with the chit chat the follows in the thread.
PM me if you need further help.
