First AutoX experience :)

Finally made it to my first autoX, it was a blast.

The weather was a little damp, sprinkling throughout the day, but it even made it more enjoyable in a few ways.

Ended up running a 44.6 as my fastest time, an M3/4/5 with similar mods (and some more experience) ran just over 44. The fastest car was running 42's I think, and that was a new Evo9 - modded pretty heavily.

I ran 39psi front, 38 rear, and didn't change them just because I wanted to try to drive better before making other adjustments.

Carnage: The very last part of the track had a slalom, then ended with a box maneuver that you had to enter, then exit on the right side of it. My last run I decided lifting was not going to be an option through this part, just to see if I could make it (everyone was lifting/braking, and it didn't seem too bad). Anyways, last run of the day (and I hadn't hit a cone yet) I left my pedal to the floor through the maneuver, and took out a cone pretty bad, apparently it went about 15ft high and spun around a bunch. I was in 2nd, at about 5000rpm, so I was going pretty good. Impact made a loud cracking noise and when I parked it, a couple pieces of my already broken underpanel were missing. I guess I need to re-ziptie it a bit, and my brake duct got twisted, but I put that back into position on site. lol.

The biggest thing I learned was to make sure you're actually using all of your car. I realized after my 3rd run that I wasn't at WOT when I needed to be - i only had the pedal down maybe 2/3s the way. I don't drive WOT on the road and it felt really weird. Shaved 3 seconds off after that, lol.

All prep-ed: (yes the Mercury Mystique next to me ran...and he drove a pretty good line too!)

I'm running H&R sports with billys, only mods are CAI, Sparco front strut brace, Konig's 'Mozart' Exhaust.

tires - I was running some very old Bridgestone RE 71's in the back (245) and some pretty worn (thank you camber) Kumho ecstas (don't remember which model).

The 97 M3 I was running with has coilovers, CAI, fan delete, some exhaust, strut bar, and was running Yoko (of some sort) 245's all around on CSL reps.

And yep, I'm hooked Too bad I'm in an area that rarely has any fun events...the snow starts falling in the next couple weeks

Myself +many others share your love. same PSI for me, but I usually gauge after every run to measure heat expansion. You really learn the limitations of your car/skills, and like you stated, how light we usually drive on a daily basis

Do you have an X-brace? chip? next mod if you dont already

Sad day, this sunday is the last run for the Minnesota AX. Where are you in the U.P? every think about traveling to the twin cities? Let know if you make it down here!

KEEP RIPPIN IT!!

Sucks about the underpanel. At least it wasn't an expensive OEM splitter.

FYI - X-brace is illegal in STU. Best thing you can do to improve the car is just some good tires when the funds allow. Kumho XS or Dunlop Star Spec. You won't believe the grip!

But no hurry though, learning to drive a car with low grip will help you be smooth! Seat time is key!

There is a good chance that I will be running my first event in my car this weekend. (Last autox was in Police Impalas, so it's going to be quite different I'm sure.)

I think it will be a blast. I'm not going to be all that competitive, just push the car a little bit and try not to take out any cones directly. Will pick up a couple rolls of painters tape to help it out.

My car is all stock btw.

Out of curiosity, where in Indiana is this event going to be?

It's not like having the X-brace is suddenly going to make you keep up with the AWD boost buggies.

I swear, they need their own class. STU-AWD or something..

good tires will knock up to 2 seconds off your times...its unbelievable how well the star specs stick in the corners...

yes, and yes. x-brace wont make a noticeable difference, but some anal competitor might get mad and protest.

i completely agree, AWD cars kinda ruined STU, and BSP, and any class the M3 was good at. (i know im butthurt).

Good to hear that you had an excellent time out AutoXing! I've done it a few times and still can't justify the time and money

What they can't see, can't hurt them... And for the first 10 events at least, he shouldn't be anywhere near to the competition, especially with his setup, so I don't think people will be scrutinizing his car.

So is the rest of the E36 M3 community...

Not many. He's running in BS (B stock) which is a stock class. So wheels, race rubber, maybe a larger front sway... that's probably about it.

I assumed as much judging but his car but I wanted some details HOW stuff is modded as opposed to simply from WHAT is modded

He's gonna be my opponent in BS. I've seen his car out there at events here in columbus

Right, not much. Just Koni's and R-comps. Gonna change my alignment specs this weekend.

The only thing left on my list right now is a sway bar, but don't know which one to get. I was gonna get a 27mm bar, but raced against another m3 with star specs and a 25.4mm bar and he was really close to my times.

Anybody have any experience with either one of these two bars? Pros and cons?

I saw that you're on the registration list. I should be there on the 17th.

What do you have done?

nothing that will worry you

X-brace, and street class level summer tires.

I wonder if they'll let us run a deleted fan/fan clutch. I want to delete it. If not, i ll just put in a new clutch but I'd rather not pay for it
