Active Autowerke E36 M3 Stage 2 Build Thread - GTS8550 Edition!

Hey Guys,

There is a beautiful E36 M3 currently getting our GTS8550 L2 kit installed.

History:
Vehicle had an older generation Dinan kit with a few upgrades including a XB-1A powerdyne charger with an RMS aftercooler, to name a few mods.

Charger blew up and sent pieces through the head and damaged 8 valves. Luckily the bottom end is in good condition.

Before the GTS8550 install will begin. We removed the head and inspected entire engine. Head received a valve job with new valves. Head was resurfaced and will be re installed with ARP head studs and a slightly lower compression head gasket.

Once head and the engine is completely back together, and a few maintenance issues are resolved. GTS8550 install will begin. I will keep you guys updated through out the install.

bearings go bad, and the impellor starts this little wiggle dancey thing, next thing you know, metal shavings. I know on my car ($1K), and the $90K turbines for the AC systems on our aircraft at work.

stock OBD2 midpipe also has a built in H-pipe, but no where near as large as that.

Didn't the owner start a related thread when the problem first arose? I searched but did not find it. Anyway, good choice in moving to AA. Are there any targets that you are shooting for?

That is not his midpipe. That is form an E46 M3, just happened to be in my pic.

The owner did make a thread about it, if i remember correctly this happened after 400 miles of driving.

I will post more pics of the install as we put on the OBDI manifold and start the GTS8550 install.

I tried emailing a few emails from your site to no avail. I need one of those tight radius throttle body elbows you use and would like an estimate.

I've heard some hear say that they will eventually be replacing the rotrex with HKS. Don't quote me!

Yeah - bought the car, drove it only 400 miles (which included the drive down from North Florida) and charger blew...sweet deal! Lot's of lessons learned...while fixing suspension to lift car also found out that the bearings were completely destroyed - so much for a "clean and dependable car"

Anyway - looking forward to getting it back with the AA's work...

I think you will like it.

What is the ETA for the build?
Are you going to have AA dyno the beast?

BTW, I HIGHLY suggest an engine oil cooler if you do not already have one on the car.

Car should be ready on Friday and dyno tested. Regarding the oil cooler, actually just spoke to a friend that owns various tuning shops in Germany and Poland and mentioned the same to me. Do you currently have one? How much is it? Does AA have any? Need to wait a while, damage done to car also damaged my wallet...

Are you tracking the car? If not, just monitor oil temp and see if it is creeping higher. If so, then move to a cooler. My temps have remained the same after supercharging.

Not planning to track car - in fact, I usually do not push at all...also, I do not think car has a oil temp gauge.

It depends on a number of factors. But generally, whenever you DOUBLE the whp of a motor, you will see an increase in oil temps.

Well, it sounds like an oil cooler is not a must for you at all. I wrongly assume that all FI people are bizerk, like me. Sorry for stereotyping you.

Yeah, I have an oil cooler on mine - but I intend to track it, too. I noticed that without my oil cooler hooked-up, the motor was seeing oil temps of 235+ after a few spirited street runs under boost in 70-80 degree wheather. This is not "bad", but I can imagine some "bad" temps (260+) if the car were tracked w/out an oil cooler in FL weather.
