| 1999 - 2005 (E46) (1999 - 2005) Starting in 1999 the E46 3 Series picked up where the E36 left off. Larger, with smoother lines, and with more advanced engines than its predecessor, the E46 easily held the title of "Best Car of the Year" throughout its life. |

Anybody grease their sunroof track?
Hello everyone
I was wondering, have any of you guys ever applied any type of grease on the tracks where the sunroof goes back and forth? The track is greased from BMW but I was thinking maybe i'll apply some to prevent any drying...Sunroof operation is perfectly fine and does not slow at any points either, the car has 44k, umm is always garaged and usually stays pretty clean so its not that the track is really dirty and dryed out... So should I put anything or is it fine as it is? Thanks

gotta question.
My sunroof works well, but seems a little out-of-order. A few months ago, I noticed some plastic chips coming from the rails which most likely belong to the slide mechanism. Althoguh the sunroof moves smoothly back and forth, there was a small cracking noise which has ceased. The sunshade seems like it may be a little looser than normal. At this point, its very usable and nothing really stands out other than the fact that some plastic fell out and the shade seems a little loose when sliding back. In fact, the shade almost seems like it doesnt go back and forth on its rails and may have lost one of its slide brackets. anyone have a diagram link to this section so I can determine what may need service? Also, is it a tough job or expensive job to repair this. It doesnt really bother me and with the cold weahter coming, Ill have even less need to open it anyway. Has anyone else had a similar issue like this? Perhaps I should have greased mine as preventive maintenance. Last edited by NYCPilot; 09-16-2009 at 06:14 PM.. |

I agree with the leave it 'till it binds or sounds dry & scratchy advise. I noticed mine stopping short of full close intermittently. The thing would finally close by bumping the switch. The circuit detects load and shuts down for safety. The guides were full of dirt and old, dry grease.
Clean all the old grease out first with Q-tips and rags. I applied white lithium grease and ran her through a couple open/close cycles. All better. |

do not use any lube liek WD-40 or alike. that type oil attracks dirt like a magnent and just creates problem. I try to lube all mine with dry graphite. it does not attrack dirt like grease does and works just as good to me.
