Z3 (E36/7, E36/8) (1996 - 2002) In 1996 BMW added the Z3 to the lineup. First available only with the 1.9 liter engine, the Z3 went on to carry every 6 cylinder produced between 1996 and 2002. A fun, sporty little 2 seater came both in convertible and coupe form. Being a bit of a “parts bin” car, the Z3 is part E30, part E36, but all original.

M mirror, or mirror adapter?

I believe that I read on here that the oval M mirror will fit the standard Z3. Does it afford any better forward view than the base model due to the shape, or is it just as bad?

Also, if anyone has a mirror adapter for sale on the cheap, please PM me.

To experience this improvement, simply remove your rear view mirror and go for a short drive.

z3mirrors has the removal instructions.

+1 I HATE the autodimming M mirrors. They don't dim how you want them to, esp. during the dawn/dusk transitions, and they are prone to leaking (although mine don't yet, knock on wood).

As for the mirror blocking forward view, it seems about the same to me with either mirror.

That's the mirror adapter I asked for. I'm just not convinced I want to shell out $50 for one.

Try the test drive. Once you see how the view opens up, you will gladly spend the money.

If you have a hard time seeing around the mirror, get the gary's mirror adapter. I don't like the cheap GM mirror, but I can finally see out of my front window.

(although no rear view mirror is even better)

I traded my auto dimming for an earlier manual dimming oval mirror. I'm pretty short, so the blindspot isn't an issue for me at all.

Did the same thing. The fact that the older mirror is wider is also useful.
I'm short as well...

Yeah, I can see through all of the rear window. The lack of chrome is less distracting, too.

I went the Gary's mirror route and really appreciated the blind spot removal but a month or so afterward, my remote entry sensor which is relocated in the A-pillar shorted. Replacing that costs $$ and I simply opted to go back to the OEM mirror setup with the new sensor. Sold the adapter here on the boards for cheap but still miss having the smaller mirror up close to the A-pillar.

http://www.bimmerschwag.com/partloca...?siteid=215477 currently has the rear view mirror on sale for $199.99. By $40, the best price I've ever seen.

The only thing I know about bimmerschwarg is their URL.

The smallest "GM" Mirror

I went ahead and bought just the adapter from Gary since I'm too cheap I guess and he didn;t offer just a plain mirror (less the gadgets). I thought I could mount a Pep Boys 8" universal mirror to it and save some money. That Pep Boys POS shakes all over the place and I can't even use it due to the blurr at highway speeds. So now I'm trying to find the smallest width mirror on Ebay and having a lot of trouble finding a small width mirror. I suppose 9" wide is OK but I would prefer 8" or less since our interiors are so small and really don't need it. Do any of you guys know of a car make, model and year that would fit my need. I just want a well made mirror with the aluminum GM base with tight joints so it doesn't shake all over the place.

The forward view blocked by the rear view mirror bothered me in the beginning when I first got my roadster. But over the years, I learned to drive with it and never even noticed it or get bothered by it anymore. I did check on Gary's mirror adapters, thought it would be nice to have one, put on it on my to-buy list, then totally forgot it even existed because I got used to that mirror blocking my view and subconsciously made my own driving adjustments. But this is just me based on my own personal experience. But, to the OP, if it really bothers you, I would go the mirror adapter route.

I ended up with a mirror adapter from a very helpful member here, so I went off to buy a mirror. I made the mistake of trying the generic 8" from Pep Boys also (it's on my counter at home to return.) It didn't fit. As it turns out, Auto Zone, Napa and Checker all carry the same mirror, just with different packaging. Crap.

I finally just went down to a local wrecking yard and wandered the GM's until I found a late 90's Grand Am that was in decent shape. The mirror is a 10" and is perfect. Five bucks later I was all set. It may be a little wider than what is really necessary due to the rollbars, but you can't beat it for the price.

I went with Gary's adapter and and the generic 8 inch mirror from AutoZone. I have been happy with both and I drive 45 miles a day on interstates to get to/from work. I now live without the remote entry sensor (it stopped working after being in the A pillar for a day). My neighborhood has twisting roads and lots of little kids. I am 100% sure they and I are much safer without the blindspot. I'm hoping Santa will bring me the UAS remote entry kit so I can use remote locking again.
