| 8 Series (E31) (1991 - 1997) As the last E24 rolled off the production line in 1989, its replacement was quick on its heels to fulfill the fantasies of those looking for a touring coupe with all of the luxury, performance, and prestige of a BMW, only now with both 8 and 12 cylinder engines. |

Well I got the AC Receiver/Dryer in Kinda dirty in there and very cramped! Royal PITA.
So now I'm replacing the AC Expansion Valve as suggested By Steffen. Question is? Where is it? I though it was under the lines running into the condensor: but there's nothing there. Any help fellow 8'ers? ![]() |

This is the HVAC unit located behind your console
![]() This is where the heater core is... ![]() This is the passenger side of the HVAC unit ![]() This is where the A/C condenser lives ![]() And here is the expansion valve... ![]()

hey man least its not so dirty in there
![]() I wonder if it can be replaced while doing a headstand in the passengers footwell area ? (glovebox removed) gawd wuffer that is an all too familiar and a horrible sight, although I do believe that is the A/C Evaporator I see residing on the bottom of the HVAC box. InDeep you may have misread and thought the expansion valve was attached to the Condenser at the radiator side of the A/C system. ------------------------------------ Removing and Installing Evaporator Expansion Valve: * Remove wiper console. * Unscrew nut. (pic #1) * Remove the glovebox. * Unscrew screws and remove the air duct. (pic #2) * Unscrew screw and remove the double-pipe. * Unscrew screws and remove the expansion valve. (pic #3) Installation: *Replace the O-rings. (3.0 book labor time) about 1.0 to 1.5 tech time ![]()

Sorry to dredge up this old thread but as I'm going to replace by a/c condensor and dryer (thanks Randy
) does it make sense to replace the evaporator valve? The a/c hasn't worked in the two years I've had the car and I want to replace all parts that are likely to be bad before I recharge the system. There's a cheap one about to close on eBay so a swift response would be great . |

It sure can't hurt Nick, it's a wee bit daunting though as you can see. A recommendation though for sure would be to replace the O-rings through the system. This is a fail area and good preventative maintenance since you're all open right now. BTW check your PM during the day, the pix of those other parts will be there.....

I was informed to replace everything from Wuffer and TXGR8white. So I did, the biggest PITA is removing your passenger side dash to access the Evaporator. While your in there might as well remove the condensor and clean it with a bleach water solution. PM me for my phone number if you'd like to go into detail of what I did. And Randy's correct as always, REPLACE EVERY O RING. Very important and lube with Pag oil, just as important!

Pretty sure they wouldn't bother changing the HVAC for LHD vs RHD. I've had my head under the steering wheel enough times to know it's very unpleasant and hurts a lot to work under there. It's a bit easier with the seat out but then the cross member tries to snap your spine and your arms still ache like hell. I'll think I'll leave it and see if it leaks
