| 1991 - 1999 (E36) (1991 - 1999) The first modern 3 Series, the E36, was the model that paved the way for the 3 Series to be named "Car of the Year" every year since the model was driving off showroom floors. Radically redesigned in 1992, the E36 was not the same 3 Series as the E21 and E30. Larger, less boxy in design, and equipped with a dual overhead cam engine, multilink rear suspension, and a more finished interior, the E36 balances sport with luxury. |

What the heck are these and what do they go to??
I know the green arrow is pointing to a red LED but what does it go to?
I've never seen it light up before that I can recall. What the heck is that thing the red arrow is pointing to and what does it do? It's metal and has a tiny hole in the center. IIRC they both have wires going to them. I guess if these aren't OE then who knows what they go to but if they are, help me figure out what they are & what they go to. Sorry for the crappy cell phone pic. 1993 BMW 325i ![]() |

the red one is probably your oem keyless/alarm dealer add on. check under the hood for a siren and a hood pin switch on the passenger side. do you have a fab for the car? if it never flashes its possible the wires failed somewhere, LED's don't usually go bad. but no clue what the other thing is. maybe it was some how the PO's go baby go button... lol

That is part of the factory alarm/keyless entry. The red light signals that it is armed. The other part of that (red arrow) is the microphone for the glass break sensor. If your system is working properly the sensitivity of the glass break sensor is adjustable. Nice feature that allows you to filter out ambient noise if you tend to park/travel in high noise areas like construction zones

Ahh yeah didn't think about an alarm. I don't have a fob, i guess the previous owner lost it or for whatever reason.. I do want to get one though. I think the car came with one originally, i'll have to check.
There is no alarm on the passenger side that I could find. I do have two horns on the driver side but i think most e36s do. I thought it may be a dummy LED that blinks when the doors lock but it doesn't. But then again, maybe I need the fob to activate it or something. No clue on the other thing. I don't even have a guess... It doesn't look like anything plugs into it (unless its got one small prong) and its not a button that i can figure out bc it doesnt press. Im stumped. While I'm thinking about it, can you electronically lock & unlock the doors on these cars from the inside? I can't find a Lock/Unlock switch anywhere. *EDIT* didn't get to read your post before I posted mine. Thanks flyfishvt!!! That makes sense! awesome.. Can it be tested? haha without breaking the glass of course ![]() Last edited by Auto Parts Guy; 08-24-2009 at 11:29 PM.. Reason: posted too late |

Open the alarm. Its adjustable via knobs inside the box.

The alarm is adjusted with dip switches on alarm box. If it blinks occasionally then it probably still works. You just need to get a fob for it. They have them on ebay usually for around $40. The speaker for it may be tucked way down under the headlights with a metal shrowd covering it.
Anyone who doesn't want their OEM alarm system anymore get in touch with me. |

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe you match the dipswitches with the ones on the fob. i.e. (up, down, down, up, down, up, up) or any order you wish just as long as they are matched. kinda like a garage door.
where is this thing at? under the hood or under the console? |

No the dip switches on the alarm unit are used to set the sensitivity of the sensor. The fob doesn't play into it. The fob doesn't have dip switches. There are a ton of DIY threads on installing and programing these OEM units. The unit should be located behind the glovebox. That's where it plugs into anyway.

I was talking about the alarm brain but i recalled them being rotary knobs not dip switches but youre right.
