my car and recent problem
Alright first off everyone knows im kinda new to the forums and have been learning alot from all of you. I havent posted pics of my beautiful POS yet but the day has come. The car needs some work... to say the least. I need to change the coils, plugs, oil, fuel filter, valve cover gasket, o2 again and recently while getting on the highway i was above 40 mph and all power was loss.
i get off at the nearest exit and was able to limp to a safe spot because when i applied the throttle over 2 or 3k it would come back. After turning my engine off and turning it on again because 30 min later i realize i had no tools to check my plugs (as i thought it culd be oil in the spark plugs maybe idk). Anyway i basically drive the car with as little throttle as possible n cruise home but at almost every red light with my foot on the brake at a stop it wuld feel as if the car was throttling itself and the revs would climb slightly. I also noticed the revs drop to idle rpm and slightly lower and it would feel as it were losing power again. How do i approach this , any ideas, i am going to check if my plugs are filled with oil today after work. Binj says maybe its a fuel pump. All this on the day i thought i was gonna go to the bear mtn meet thank god i decided last minute that i shuldnt go or else id be facing this on the highway with cleanee34 and samson laughing as they cruise away to bear mtn. ![]()

Do a stomp-test and see if the car will throw any codes. The procedure is detailed here:
http://www.bmw4life.com/stompTest.htm You may have a MAF issue or a TPS issue.

i know how to do the maf test the only code i have is a o2 sensor but i replaced it and didnt hang it correctly because i didnt have wire ties and by the time i got them it was dragged on the pavement till the point where my check engine has been coming on all the time. Binj said it could do with the fuel pump, how do i check if it is a maf issue

Sounds like it's fuel related. I don't have a 525 so taking a stab here....but there a valve on the end of the fuel rails that's vacuum actuated. Based on the vacuum of the intake, more or less, it would adjust the fuel pressure to the rails. That's what I would look first. It sounds like a feed back system is telling the engine to increase and then decrease the fuel pressure. Put a fuel line pressure gauge and check the fuel pressure and see if it's related to the rpms while at idle.

that will piss off the computer alot! an intake or exhaust leak will also cause an o2 code, as well as a low fuel supply problem, ever change the fuel filter?

a lil far for a 4 hr meet but ima see because i would love to go and really bummed about the bear mtn meet i missed.
About the o2 wire im getting a shrink tube i need to fix that lil problem, driving today seemed odd because the car would feel fine with the check engine light on but the misfire would happen when its off is this clue that it could be the o2 thats dragging. Note that i understand many things could trigger a o2 code but when i changed the o2 couple weeks ago the code went away.

If you've got a bad wire on the O2 sensor and are shorting it out, or it's losing it's connection that will cause a lean or rich condition and cause your problem.
Rule #1, fix the obvious stuff first. Fix that sensor then come back and let us know if it's still having problems. |

well i attemped to repair the wire according to binj info but there were to many obstacles that made this simple repair a annoying nightmare. so o just cut the wire short so i have to replace it and i need a voltmeter to check the fuel pump. How do i check it with the voltmeter?
