e46 330 TT built engine swap begins

About a week ago I started working on engine removal to take my manifolds and oil pump to my machine shop dude.... I'll try to keep this thread updated. I'm somewhat decent about updating e46nonm.com

I apologize for the mess, but it's finally out, on a stand.

The new motor should be done in a few weeks.

EDIT: for high-res images, go to www.e46nonm.com

Great work bluejeans, the install looks to be coming along nicely.

Every one of these TT installs makes me want to tear down my car even sooner and do this install. NickG has made crazy power levels too easy to attain for the average grease monkey.
You should've seen the internet explode with whiners when BMW changed the "2002", to the "3 series". It was crazy.

This is a little more on the custom side. Its going to be kind of an aluminum block Frankenstein motor.

Slow in turbo 528i thanks to a poor driver and lots of heat soak (I couldn't figure out how to drive a pucked clutch off the line to save my life).

LM7 swap in progress/paused pending garage remodel.

a lil custom, for the most part, my setup will be TT stage 1 with a built engine.

A lil later, not much later at all, a larger turbo will be commissioned for better breathing, a few immediately attached turbo pipes might need to be partially re conceived, ie, charge pipe, down pipe, gravity oil drain.

I don't like that your car is going to be faster than mine.

    I'm back in town btw.

I would hope I'm faster than david. Still need to pull a little bit of fuel, but I should be atleast in the 330-350whp area.

I am so confused by your removal method. Pulling the front end would have been easier.. Oh well to each his own!

What type of power did you put down previously, and what was the reason to rebuild?

Julio didn't get it on a dyno with the meth system working properly so he never saw high boost on the dyno to get numbers. The engine had really started to let go before his only few pulls, and I don't know what he made.

And, the rings were shot, and possibly a ring-land failure.

My removal method was due to a tremendous lack of space and the ease of removal that this actually was. it looks complicated, but it required very little effort, and absolutely no movement of the hoist with the engine suspended in air. This might sound like a nuisance of an issue, but to my $120 high-tech, high-quality harbor freight hoist, it was a concern. in front of my car i have no more than 4.5 feet... that's not enough space to move an engine, a hoist and a transmission, unless i were to put it on the ground anyway. I know the image looks like i put the valve cover to the ground, but it has about 4" of clearence, it's just the shadows.

the only verified power i put down, with serious blowby was 300whp@8psi... i made a bit more with more boost and a lot more with a lot more boost and 100% meth, i just don't know how much.

word up! I heart my HF shiz. I dunno about the event, I will probably be running my little 60 trim in the beginning of October unless funds free up for my turbo choice- which isn't 100% yet, it's like 98.5%.... I'll give more insight to this when I actually source the piece... think gt35r

the previous engine was stock with cams

low compression weiscos, headwork +1mm valves, 248/256s will stay, i plan to experiment with different intake cams, eagle rods, some block reinforcement, bottom end balancing, twin disc jbr clutch/flywheel.

    I am in orlando.

I run the harbor freight plate trim

HF hoists are fine, I've hucked dozens of engines around with them. That's a cramped space, damn. I only had 5ft in my first garage, had to get the motor high enough with hardly pulling it forward so I could swing it around the side lol, pita.. Second one was a bay and a half long and was cake, providing you made sure to center the car under the rafters so it was a straight shot back.

I really look forward to this buld, we haven't seen much in the way of built M54's. Are you sleeving?

He's running the stock sleeves with a minor overbore.

The engine should be pretty sturdy still.

M54's thus far have held 450 whp fine with head lift becoming the issue. A main focus area was head reinforcement. And resleeving blocks isn't something I'd want to get involved in if it was my engine.

84.5 mm bore should leave enough structure to be fine.

He had large steel inserts (large bolts essentially) threaded into the block. Its similar to a timesert but much longer. ARP E36 block head studs. Should be sufficient for a GT35

Yes indeed, the M50/2 10mm ARP2000's should hold it down, if the block can support it, as it sounds it can.

Go with Siemens 60's, ~$250-290+SH, can support over 500whp, just like the 35R

Off topic, but cruise set at 80-85 what kind of fuel economy do you see?
