Whirring sound from fan clutch
So I put in a new Behr fan clutch the other day since I had signs of heating up on idle with the ac on, or stop and go. Since then the car has been great, drove to California with the ac on and the needle never moved, even in traffic the water temperature was fine. Since I returned from Cali, I noticed a whirring sound about once a day every now and then, its rpm related and gets louder as the rpms climb. It's only for a few seconds then goes back to being quiet for a couple days.
Does this mean, the fan clutch is temporarily locked? Would this be a sign that the new fan clutch is faulty? Since I received the clutch, I've always laid it with the nut facing upwards (box had a sticker with arrows facing upwards). I have heard some stories about new OEM fan clutches being faulty out of the box so thought I'd ask. Thanks for any help.

The clutch is a possibility, but the noise could be a failing bearing on any of the belt driven parts. Take the belt of and spin each pulley to assess the condition of the bearings.

Thanks for the reply. I changed out the three main pulleys a few months ago, so I'm not sure if they could be on their way out already, but I'll check them again later today. Maybe it could be the alternator, not sure.

If it's fairly consistent, you could pull the fan & clutch off... drive it around for a bit, and see if the noise goes away. Pretty easy to pull it with the right wrench. If you don't have one... let me know. Sounds like you're probably right down the street from me.

Yeah I've seen you around and always wanted to go for a cruise, let me know if you have some free time. I'm temporarily borrowing the fan clutch tools so have to see what's making that noise. Thanks for the offer on the tools btw, might come in handy when I return these ones lol.
Gonna try and find out what's making that noise in the morning, in the meantime, thanks for everyone's help. |

Well it's definitely coming from the fan. The noise and speed of the fan increases as the rpm's climb. It seems to only do in once the engine has reached it's operating temperature.
Would this be normal since it was about 110F today? My original OE fan clutch was made by Sachs and never made any type of noise, no matter what rpm I was at. |

could it really be related to your water pump? seeing how that is what's attached to the fan/fan clutch? GL though!

I just replaced my fan clutch and I have noticed the exact same thing. I just thought it was normal and never heard it before because I have only had the car for a year and assumed that it's been bad the entire time. Nothing like a summer with now 60+ days of 100 degree temps to bring out the faults in your cooling system.

I'll look into it, but I just changed out my water pump with an OE Composite one about 30k miles ago. I was hoping it would last longer than that.
