1999 - 2005 (E46) (1999 - 2005) Starting in 1999 the E46 3 Series picked up where the E36 left off. Larger, with smoother lines, and with more advanced engines than its predecessor, the E46 easily held the title of "Best Car of the Year" throughout its life.

Carsoft - if you haven't looked in awhile, look again. This thing is neat!

So a long time ago, I looked into a carsoft solution for my E34. It was....odd. You needed 2 serial ports, the computer couldn't be too fast, and it was in german only. No thanks.

I recently took another look at it and it has come a long way. Without going into too many details (as there is a whole other forum for this), I am extremely pleased with the result. I can read quite a few computers in my 2001 330Ci.

I bought the unit because I had an airbag light on and wanted to diagnose it without taking it somewhere. I read the light, reset it, and it immediately came back, within 10 seconds.

Because I had recently replaced the seatbelt tensioner within the last 15 months, I thought it was odd it failed so early. I dug under the seat and wiggled some of the wires around. Reset the light again, and now its staying off.

So, with multiple reset ability (rather than just taking it to a shop) I've been able to tell that the error is actually pointing to a loose wire rather than a failing tensioner, I think anyway.

I was also able to read the memory in the DME, the instrument cluster, the ZKM (whatever that is), the ABS/ASC system, and a handful of others. The ABS/ASC will be handy if I ever lose an ABS sensor.

If you want to read more about it, DJ Genius has a review thread in the E36 forum, and theres a lot of info in the diagnostic software subforum.

One last thing - anyone in South Florida is willing to come by for a read/reset for just beer money.

I don't think I can do any flashing with it to change the light type, but I'm not sure. There are a few sections for "coding", which I believe refers to putting a new DME/airbag/ABS computer in the car and writing the information from the old one onto the new one, but I might be wrong about that. I just got the setup yesterday and haven't played around with it.

Its also got a handful of other features, definitely going to have to explore what I can do with this thing.

I have seen a few references to the car soft scan tool. Is this a PC based unit or a stand alone? I am having problems between my EWS and the DME. Is this something that this scan tool will cover? Where can I get one and how much $$ . Thanks
