Rusted exhaust pipes - what are my options/(question mark)

I have the exhaust off of my car, but it is at my friend's house. I don't have any pics with me, but I will get some later.

All I have to show you the problem is this short video. Hit play then pause immediately and you will get a blury picture of the problem.

Does this look like something that could be patched/

I am really trying to conserve, and want to save money wherever I can, so if you were a poor, unemployed 22 year old, what would you do/

Straight pipe it?

Would you mind taking a video of your car running with it off?

need better pics to judge, but if they're totally rotted out you can have an exhaust shop make something work for really short money.

I will get pics up soon. I called the Midas near my house, and they said that putting new pipes between would be $300+ for pipes and labor at $90/hour.

Find a place that isn't a chain, you'll get a much better deal at an exhaust indy.

I thought that was a good idea way back. It really gives you an appreciation for how much mufflers do.

imo i would try a monroe ar cole muffler. midas seems to be the least reputable place around here, although not sure how they are in your area, i would say if it is that hole i see, than might as well get both of them replaced. i know it would cost you here about 70 smackers if that

when i did my custom cat-back midas tried to charge me nearly $600 in just parts and labour not including the labour. I went to a custom shop near the shop i work at. He was kind enough to charge me $350.

+1 on Janders comment.

I had my exhaust unexpectedly disconnect from the header, at the firewall, on my 320i, at highway speeds. Mufflers are good. You'll like the sound for about 15 seconds then no one, including you, will want to drive in your car.

I have a decent one from the '91 535i that I'm parting. You're not exactly close, but shipping likely wouldn't be too horrible. Let me take a closer look. Email me at BavarianFanatic at gmail dot com if you're interested or want pics...

PMing you.

Took it to the shop today, and the guy said he could not put a sleeve over it because the pipes were semi-flat on the upper side. His shop did not have pipe bending stuff, and said he did not know anyone close that did. He said that it looked like the pipes were very close to rusting through in other areas, and that passing inspection would be very difficult without replacing it with a good condition used or new CENTER SILENCER (18129068595)

Part #1 in this realoem diagram:

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...71&hg=18&fg=20

The rusted out hole is on the pipe just below the #10 and #11 parts in that diagram.

He said I might be able to rig something up to pass inspection in a few months, but it would be a temporary fix at best. He was saying I could find cement puddy and stuff like that and try to patch it up after clearing away as much rust as possible.

BTW, the pics I took are on some silly little fancy new memory card so I can't get them on my computer via the memory stick port, and can't find the adapter.

I hope you guys have a good idea of the problem. I am thinking I should just try and find a used one that will last a year or two more. Anybody going to the Bear Mountain meet feel like throwing one on their roof and bringing it to me? =p

That can be patched.. it just might not be pretty and the shop you were at may not have wanted to mess with it. Find another shop or some one with a welder and bring the exhaust in off the car, it shouldn't even be too expensive. Or take a sawzall and cut out that section and have it replaced. I just did that on my car, the shop did not even charge me it was so quick.

The exhaust was already off the car. I showed it to him in the back of our Suburban.

The guy seemed honest, he was a young guy who could tell I was looking for the cheapest way out and was going out of his way to try and help me find the cheapest way of getting in through inspections. He was not trying to sell me the part through his shop.

I have no tools or experience with welding either.
