Defining characteristic
I was just reading an article about the new Mercedes Benz E class and I thought about something:
Obviously this is no secret to anyone, but have you noticed that besides three or four car manufacturers, BMW is the only one who found a defining characteristic and stuck with it across its whole model range? If you look at every bimmer since the 303, there is not a single one to be found without the double-kidney grille. From the beautiful 507 all the way to the 'WTF is that abomination!?' 5 Series Gran Turismo. If you look at Mercedes for example, they have never found it. I thought about the 'ladder' style taillights , but they are not a constant. Round/square headlights, trapezoidal grille/square/round grille (SLK), they have experimented with everything. Same goes for Audi; just to name its two most direct German competitors. From the top of my head I can only remember two other car makers that have accomplished that: Alfa Romeo and Bugatti, and both curiously via shaped grilles. Am I missing another one? Yes, this is a useless post, but I just wanted to break the 'check my new M5 bumpers' routine, and maybe you will appreciate your bimmer a little bit more ![]()

Bently's always seem to have that large square front end... but the characteristics you described about BMW's are what links us to the past. Gives us a true heritage.

All Hyundai's carpeting has always been made by the hair of North Korean alley cats.
