I have an 01 m3 and usually put the car in gear with my foot on the clutch when I turn it off. This morning I turned it off without my foot on the clutch and something underneath the car rattles pretty bad, any idea what this might be.
Im going to bring it down to the shop on my next day off, just wondering if you guys might have any idea.
Its normal...if you turn it off with the clutch out, it rattles...mine's not that loud, but definitely noticeable.
It's normal (most of the time anyway), I've had 2 M3's make the same sound when the clutch is NOT in.
I think this is referred to as driveshaft-rattle?
Mine has made this noise, but I'm unaware of a reason to be concerned.

I don't notice it anymore.... think of it as part of the car's personality (like the sound of the factory exhaust).
Rattle = normal (unfortunatley). But if after the rattle is gone, you still hear something spinning down loudly it could be the pulleys. One of my tensioner pulleys is so dried up inside that it sounds like sandpaper for 10 seconds after I turn the car off
i've been wondering about that too, good to know its another "normal" thing for the M3
i believe its the flywheel making the noise, its normal
I would have to say that it is the throw-out bearing. I have heard it with all my Manual transmission BMW's, just must be the design is all. Actually didn't hear it for the first 6 months after I replaced my clutch complete about 6 years ago in the 5er.
Hi all, believe its the clutch release bearing and the rattle is very common. No need to worry. My 330I Sport 5sp manual did this. Not noticed it with SMG. Probably because it starts beeping at you if you switch off in neutral....
Depends on the sound of the rattle. Heat shields would have a 'tinny' sound like dropping a tin can lid onto the kitchen counter, these trans have a lower tone metallic sound like marbles in a coffee tin can.
Heat shields are mounted both ways, some are welded onto the exhaust system and a weld becomes loose and the shield vibrates. Other shields are bolted to the underside of the body, as BMW is.

in my SMG m3. Typically heard after pulling into a parking space.
When it became a hard failure such that we had to tow it home and pull
the transmission, we found that the fork pivot and retainer were broken
up and the fork was floppy, able to rub against the spinning basket.
The spot where the slave rod pushed it was worn through. It shouldn't
take more than an hour to remove the slave and with a bent hanger
and flashlight, determine if the fork is properly retained.
my DMF rattles sometimes...not worried.
Stukreit's failure is bound to have a different noise than DMF rattle-
