1998 BMW 528i Wiper Does Not Shut OFF!!!

So...i've this car for a while. It does not have rain sensor, so there is no "auto" switching my wipers.

Just recently, wipers start whenever i turn my engine on, and never turns off, even when it is in OFF position. It swivels every 10/15 sec or so.

I am so frustrated, before anybody post a message "do some search". I've done the research, and according to that i tried to change WIPER RELAY MODULE. However the problem still persists.

I want to try to repair this problem on my own, since the dealer ship charges like $175 just to check what can be the problem...what a rippp off i must say...

Please guys shed some light on my situation and if you have any idea to repair it.

Probably a fried relay in the E-Box. Updated relays are available from the dealer. If you have access to a GT1, inputs from the switch can be checked to ensure the switch is working correctly, but my money is on the relay....

Remove the passenger side Cabin Air Filter/Box.
Underneath is the Fusebox.

Look for a Tan (Salmon) color Relay.
Best to to activate wipers, then remove the relay. If this shuts down the wiper, then it is the correct relay.
Go to local dealer and get a new relay for $20.

Have you done anything (checked, replaced, etc) the wiper stalk? If changing the relay does nothing...perhaps it's because a signal is being sent that the wipers have been requested to operate...and that would come from the stalk on the steering column.

Just a thought.

Yes, the wiper did stop when i remove the relay. As matter of fact, i am driving w/ out the wiper relay (its so annoying when you are driving and wiper is on all the time)

does the knurled wheel potentiometer on the stock work? ie if you move the knob does it go faster or slower?
you could either have a bad wiper stalk, or a bad gm..

if you have a volt meter you can check pins 2 and 4 on x295 they should both read 0 volts





if the stock is bad, for your case you should see voltage on pin 4 but not pin 2


it might be easier to access the wires at the gm:
pins 4 and 5 at x332:
this is behind the glove box


here a bad stalk would have voltage on pin5 but not pin 4

When the relay was inside, the "potentiometer" did work!!

As for the voltmeter issue, i think i might have to go buy one. Do you DIY to take apart the stering wheel or something like that so that i can take the reading.

Or do you have DIY for the process to check the voltage that you have mentioned (it looks tough) but feels like its not...right

sorry man, hmm i tried searching both forums because i swear i remember someone showing the steps to removing the glove box to get to the gm, but i cna't find it now.. anyhow your best be would be to find yourself a copy of the e39 Bentley manual, there are used ones on ebay all the time.. will show you exactly how to remove/inspect/replace almost everything in your car.

it has been long time......

So it started raining yesterday and it was so hazardous for me driving w/out my wipers working.....i want to get this fixed ASAP.

The problem is: the wipers does not shut off

Possible Sol'n and Suggestions I've Tried:
1. Changed the wiper module relay with the new one from dealer - Still Problem Presists
2. Changed the speed of the wiper to see if potentiometer works - IT DOES WORK; wiper is able to change speed!!

Anybody have any other suggestions before i go to the dealer as a final step. I really do not want to spend $175 just for the diagnostic. I am afraid that they would just try to rip me off and plus not knowing what the exact problem is and going thru trial and error method to see what can be the problem and charging me for it for each trial and error steps they take like changing relay, changing switch, etc....

If some1 out there is expert on this electrician stuff for BMW, who lives in Bay Area and would like to help me out solve this, please let me know how i can contact you. I do not mind paying if the problem can be solved. Feel like i can trust the forum members much more than the dealers...lol

Find a good friend with the same car and swap a wiper stalk.
