Friday August 7 through Sunday August 9, 2009: Sponsoring Chapter: Boston Chapter
The Boston and Quebec Chapters are proud to host Bimmers Across the Border XI Club Race at Le Circuit Mont-Tremblant. Le Circuit Mont-Tremblant is one of the premier tracks in North America. Built in 1964 in the shadow of the majestic Mont-Tremblant, the picturesque and twisty 15-corner 2.65-mile track was completely rebuilt and upgraded in 2001. The layout is a classic, as it combines the natural topography of the site with elevation changes from the start/finish line to corner 8 and back. There will be a 45 minute time slot for a race at the end of the day on Friday. A 60 minute slot for an end of the day race on Saturday, and a 45 minute time slot for a race just before noon on Sunday. Registration limited to the first 30 cars. Racers are encouraged to take advantage of the group rates that we have negotiated with the Tremblant Resort. Our group block is limited so you are encouraged to reserve as early as possible for the best availability. For more information and rates, please go to the Boston Chapter website at: http://www.boston-bmwcca.org/events/...px?EventID=425 More... |

And don't say you're instructing the event - you'll have a helluva time convincing them you're doing it out of the kindness of your heart and not being paid. Passports mandatory at the border this year.

VM Team will be heading up on the 6th early am. Anyone up for a stroll? We will also have the HD cams available if anyone is interested. We had a great event with SCDA this past thursday. Great footage!!
**SCDA also announced that they will be running the FULL course at Monticello. Amazing track if you get to drive it all. See you all at LCMT!

In the last few years, it's been increasingly difficult to run in Canada. It's not that getting into Canada is difficult, it's that getting back into the US is. For the last few years, I've gone through a customs broker and it has worked out fine. I send him a bunch of paperwork and he sends me about 3 times as much.
On the other hand, there are many dirt trackers that run in both countries and that get through. So, on a smaller scale, it's usually not a problem. I do know that the fuel issue can really hurt you of they catch it (going into Canada). For GP3R, I ended up buying my fuel to have it at the track but it's $11.81/gal as opposed to $6.50/gal for what I get charged in the states. I do know that the Canadian Radio Industry will shut you down if you don't get a temporary license from them. They have a few people that come around to our races and check if you got the license. For smaller events, they might not check. The real issue is actually coming back into the US. So far, getting into Canada (especially if they know you are a racer) seems to not be a problem. |

A few LCMT tips:
Right now the exchange rate appears to favor the US by about 8%, so it might be worth it to get there early enough to exchange some US dollars in St. Jovite. Everyone will take your US dollars in a pinch, though. A passport seems to help smooth the crossing, and may be required now. I have found the Rt 91 crossing better than the Rt 89 crossing. Don't say that you race (prize money -- ha ha). Don't say that you instruct (salary -- ha ha). "Going to a driving school." or "Going to drive my car on the race track." seems to be best. Yes, those are all my personal tools. No, I'm not selling tires or buying tires in Canada. Being in a convoy seems to help -- maybe. Get to Montreal before about if possible 1 or be prepared for horrible rush "hour" traffic. Know your route because there's no room to pull over and look at a map in the city. On the return, there is something to be said for getting back across the border (or at least through Montreal that night (Sunday late will have no traffic), or leaving really early in the am on Monday (like 4 or 5). Hitting Montreal at 10am isn't so great on the return. There is usually access to the track the day before, so you can arrive and unload (trailer, drop off tires, etc.) No jacking or jack stands on the pavement, so bring plywood. Don't count on air, although USUALLY someone puts a compressor by the food building. If it's really hot, the lake is FANTASTIC to swim in at the end of the day. Bring a swim suit or improvise. The track food is pretty darn good -- salads and charcoal grill items -- much better than other tracks that I've been to. The sound limit is for real. Don't come without a plan to meet it as they WILL be testing. Any stock exhaust will be fine, with the possible exception of exotic cars (Ferrarris, for example, may have to short shift on the front straight.) Bring family -- this is a huge resort area with lots to do. Great food, particularly off the "Disneyland" mountain area.

Getting threw Montreal is fairly straight forward even though there is a lot of traffic, it's highway all the way.

I have crossed into Canada to Calabogie twice, with an open 2 car tailer and truck beds loaded to the hilt, including big full fuel jugs... and was never held up or slowed down one bit.
We do get a bit of the hairy eyeball coming back into the US, but its always been easy so far, without any prep. That said, I hope i didn't just jinx myself. Hopefully I will be in LCMT for the race.

Yes, the route through Montreal is pretty straight forward, but it can be a total crawl at rush hour. There is also a confusing stretch, where you briefly are going east (which is a bit counterintuitive if you are coming from the east and going northwest to the track). I'm just saying, look at the map ahead of time. There are also multiple routes possible through Montreal if you must arrive at rush hour. I haven't explored them. Last, don't get off the highway before your exit number. The road you want intertwines with the highway. I know of at least one person who took the 90 minute ride from Montreal to the track and, uh, made it very scenic. ![]() Also, know where the track entrance is ahead of time. The HPDE event doc has directions. It's not like you can just drive down the road, hoping to see a giant sign. The entrace is down a side street.

Touchette (800 381-1846) is not a supplied service from the track. They are approved by the track though, which is why Talon Tire (514-337-0833) cannot service cars anymore. They are not "approved". Touchette must be called in advance, and being a business, they take the decision wether they accept or not. They have three guys on duty, plus the equipment and the big van. Talked to them last year and they mentionned they loose money on such events. BAB being a big events, I am sure they will be at the track. And they have a compressor.
I wouldn't count on the corner garage to mount slicks or even R Compounds. Many drivers attending LCMT will try, at all cost, to avoid Montreal's traffic. Either bypassing the city itself, or driving thru Montreal way outside rush hour (7AM to 10AM and 3PM to 7PM). Crossing at 1000 Islands' border and driving thru the Laurentians is a way to bypass Montreal.

re: Montreal Traffic
The best way to do it is to reach the south side of the Champlain Bridge (the bridge you cross to get onto the Island of Montreal) no earlier than 7pm. Before then, one of the inbound (northbound) lanes is closed (used for buses coming from montreal). So not only do you have to deal with rush hour traffic, but you have 2 lanes instead of 3. After 7pm, that lane is opened up and traffic has also diminished (coincidence!!). You then fly through Mtl all the way to Tremblant sans traffic, drop off the trailer at the track, and grab a nice dinner. |
