1991 - 1999 (E36) (1991 - 1999) The first modern 3 Series, the E36, was the model that paved the way for the 3 Series to be named "Car of the Year" every year since the model was driving off showroom floors. Radically redesigned in 1992, the E36 was not the same 3 Series as the E21 and E30. Larger, less boxy in design, and equipped with a dual overhead cam engine, multilink rear suspension, and a more finished interior, the E36 balances sport with luxury.

if cam timing is off, will it throw code?

I did some work a while ago removing the front cover which required removing the vanos.

Ever since then, the car has run rough at idle. Past idle it feels great. I have the cam locking tools and marked the cams too. For those who have done this, the upper cam is slightly "off" and there's a note in Bentley about this being done as a TSB to correct a rough idle on certain '95's. By "off", I mean there's no way for the locking tool to sit flat like it does on the lower cam (closest to the fender).

I don't want to rip the whole thing apart if it's a vacuum leak, flaky coil or something else I touched.

Any ideas on how to rule the cam timing in or out as a suspect?

thanks,
Bob

BTW - it's an OBD I car and it doesn't look like I have any codes.

Did You Find Out What the Problem Was?

Did You Find Out What the Problem Was? I'm trying to rule out cam timing on my 92 as a cause of high HC.
Thanks
Bruce

+1, I suspect my timing as well after the head gasket work. when i did the work, the cams seem to sit pretty well inside the locking tool. i just wasn't able to get the flywheel locking tool in so I eyed it.

When inserting the vanos the intake cam sprocket needs to be all the way clockwise adn as you insert the vanos you rotate it counterclockwise. you also need a lower chain tensioner tool. Basically use the casing from the tensionor and fit a long socket the right width inside it then insert and tighten intill it gives enough tension.
