8 Series (E31) (1991 - 1997) As the last E24 rolled off the production line in 1989, its replacement was quick on its heels to fulfill the fantasies of those looking for a touring coupe with all of the luxury, performance, and prestige of a BMW, only now with both 8 and 12 cylinder engines.

Engine overheating

i just pulled my 850i out of storage after three months. It seems to be running fine except that the engine overheats at idle or low speeds. Heat goes back down when i hit the highway. Anyone else have this problem or have any suggestions? Anyone know where i can get a good 8-series repair manual?

Bleed the coolant system several times. Run it a bit between bleeds.

It shouldn't over heat at idle if the fan spins at all.

Don't let it run hot !! Headgaskets can go away!!

Also check for coolant in the oil before you start.

The Bentley for the e32 7 series (89 thru 94) is as close as you can get. A lot of common ground between e31 and e32.

About $84 at Amazon so shop around.

Definitely sounds like the fan clutch going..... Also, aside from the radiators tendancy to crack at the top connection, the low riding 8's tend to suck up all sorts of crap that coats the radiator. There was a cool picture on radfly of a guy who still had the outline of a bird on his radiator.....
