2002 (1967 - 1977) The first modern BMW debuted at the Frankfurt auto show in 1961, and has people talking to this day. The philosophy of a sports car that is also practical was born in the 2002, and has carried on to its successor, the 3 Series.

The restoration of BELLA =)

Meet Bella She is my 74 turbo. She originated from Italy and now here in Cali. She is a very fine example of a very rare dry original 74 2002 turbo. Everything in her is from 74. Including a faded cracked paint and a blown original motor.

Dec 29 2008 She arrived at Casey Motorworks in Petaluma Ca.

January 09 she arrives at United Auto Collision Center in Burlingame for her make over.

She then joins her sister Chloe. My other 74 turbo that originated from the UK.

Like a Hollywood Star. There is where she got her Chemical peel

Also she got her seams sealed

BTW meet Simon her pet snake

March 09

Etching Primer and Primer was applied.

The yellow green stuff is etching primer to prevent her from rust

beautiful work

That is great work. The RS's are beautiful, but I really find they take away from the uniqueness of the factory Turbo. Too much bling on a rare car for my taste. Just my opinion. As you know, wheels are like ice cream, one man's strawberry is another's rocky road. Are you including an intercooler with the engine re-build? It eliminates a multitude of heat issues and design flaws. These were afterall, just commercial truck turbos and not very sophisticated.

What does this cost? I really want to know, and the no-holds-barred answer too. How long does it take?
I may have found a Tii near me that would need this type of attention, and want to know what to expect, realistically...

I had the original turbo steelies restored as well. Would you prefer these over the RS ? They are 15x6.5 & 7

Paint and body work not including parts is 17K. It was in the body shop since January

Unwrapped and still enjoying our 80 degree weather.

Shampoo her original 1 pcs carpet which is in excellent condition.

Another view of her engine bay

Comment about the wheels

Alvin, The Alpina's would be a better choice for me, but as you know it all comes down to personal taste. I also like the 13" Mahle bottle cap alloys that were optional on the turbo. I am sure it will be fabulous either way and I love the RS's (especially on a Polaris car), just something about them on a turbo that I don't like. Go figure. If you decide to let either set go from your expansive wheel collection, let me know. Can't wait to see pics of the finished product. It is very exciting every time someone does the right thing to save one of these cars. Good on you. Best, Tim

17K huh? that's a lot, but if it must be done right, then that's the way it should be.
What of the parts and labor to reinstall everything? I imagine that's the really lengthy and exhaustive stuff....

Wow! I am speechless. This has to be one of the cleanest restorations I've seen in a while. Your turbo looked gorgeous even before the restoration, I can't wait to see the finished product.

That's the way to do it. Very very nice. except there are two things that I would like to point out and one is personal preference.

1. The stone guard is to heavy. These cars came with a light stone guard.
2. The wheels, too modern I would have personally stuck with original. I don't believe those wheels are the original style, are they?

Keep sending pictures as the project progresses to completion.

Burt

And thats for body work and paint alone not including parts such as new rubber, chrome and seals. My other turbo is expected to cost a lot more since it has a bit of rust . The shop thats painting my car specializes in rare euro vintage restos and they do things correct. I always believe that it would save more if I do things right the first time.

Thank you Burt Having it thicker was my choice for more protection. Its not really thicker its the way it was applied with the Fusor spray gun. Its more fine and even . I also had the original steelies restored to keep the car original.
