Raven #313 VIR Update

Been really busy this week and haven't had time to post. Here's a recap:

Friday - missed qualifying due to a fried mass air sensor. Car was running great till then. The Bimmerworld team and Randy M. did a great job trying to get me going but we just didn't get it done for qualifying. Started at the back of the pack and had a blast. Worked my way up to 13th overall and 7th CM with the 3rd fastest CM time at 2:05.something. Battery on camera must have given out as i have nothing. This would have been fun to watch.

Saturday - Qualified 5th. Had a good start (after turn 1 at least!) and had a great time trying to stay on Steve Bassen's tail for the race. Like a dog chasing a rabbit. Great fun! Finished 4th overall and 2nd CM. Turned a 2;03.something. Here's the video:

Saturday Enduro - Marquis #313 CM

Sunday - Mass air sensor quit in qualifying. Randy quickly got me a new one installed and I got back out in time to qualify 3rd. Thanks Randy! Started 3rd and finished 3rd. Steve was on his game and I just didn't have anything for him. Turned my best lap of the weekend - 2:02.9 but it wasn't enough. I couldn't be more pleased considering it's my second race at the track and my last rookie race.

Sunday Sprint Full Note the multi camera view from Marty's car at around 17:40

Sunday Sprint video - fast lap

Raven builds an incredible car and the Bimmerworld S54 package rocks!!

Thanks to John and team at Raven and James, Jason and the whole Bimmerworld team for all your help as I've worked through my "issues" of the past year.

Thanks to Peter Carroll for helping me with setup. Sorry your car was acting up. Would have been fun with another Raven car to play with.

Looking forward to Mid-O.

Mark

Um I never said you hit me... My issue was with him (Carrol) having car issues and just slowing early in very inconvinient places. I hammered my brakes (before the braking zone) and almost spun to the inside in avoidance. His car was fully loaded and then some. My car was turned all the way in then some more to avoid his early braking for oak tree. Like I said if there had been some extremely light contact, it was not even enough to mark a carbon dive plate. None of this was intentional and I did not appreciate the way Mr Carrol handled the situation. I enjoyed racing with everyone. philsans5, I thought we had a pretty clean race and enjoyed it!

Hey Max, great to meet you. Considering how "fresh" your car is you were seriously quick out there!

Hope to see you at many more BMW Club Races.

Cheers,

Mark

VIR Videos - Fri and Sat

Well, I finally got around to uploading a few videos to YouTube from this past weekend:

Friday sprint - the last lap and a half. I had a great 8-lap battle with Davis leading up to this, and then finally on the very last lap I was able to take advantage of a mistake in turn 3 and get by. He accidentally tapped me on my left rear bumper as we went into turn 4, man it doesn't take much to get a car loose at the limit!!! I thought I was definitely going to lose it!!!

Saturday enduro start and first few laps. Trying to keep Dave and James in contact.

Saturday enduro - middle of my initial stint, racing with Dave.

Saturday enduro - VJ's restart, working up through heavy traffic after the FCY.

I'm still uploading Sunday's videos to YouTube, I'll post those links tomorrow.

Cheers!

Vern

My wife took a lot of pictures at the VIR race last weekend. I've posted a bunch at http://www.driversmeeting.com/AllanL/albums/74. They've been reduced to 800x600, but if you're interested in the full res version of any of them, let me know and I'll email them to you.

Great work all around. Cool pass Dave made at the 3:00 min mark on the bridge straight when you were hung up behind some SE26's.
Good stuff!

Hmmm. Each high res picture is a little over 1.5MB, so that would make the total about 250MB. Not really something one can email. I'll have to think about how I would want to handle that.

I, hmmm, "lost" a dive plane at Oak Tree and need to get a replacement. If anyone has a spare driver's side dive plane or needs a passenger side one and wants to split a new set, please let me know.

Thanks - Denis

I know your pain.... I would be happy to go in on a deal with you, but unfortunately I not only lost my passenger one, I also lost the entire bumper and splitter and everything.

Major thanks to Davis for lending me his spare - true Club Racing spirit there, that rocks!!!

I'd love to try to find a cheaper alternative to those pricey carbon fiber ones, perhaps in fiberglass or something. I may run Mid-O without them for now.

Maybe we can talk James into taking pity on us and giving us a really good deal on two sets!!! What do you say James?? LOL......

It seems Oak Tree has claimed many a front end. They need to smooth out the grass on the outside of the exit. I did a bucking bronco through there last year and took out my first splitter. I know I know....keep it on the pavement and this won't happen.

The reason it's not smooth out there is because people keep driving off the track and digging the front of their cars into the ground. Stay on the track and the problem is solved for everyone.

I made mine out of thin aluminum. They don't weigh much and cost 10X less than a set of CF ones. However they are not curved.

I went out there one time and left 1/2 my splitter. (The important 1/2) That's the last time I check my mirrors mid turn in the rain!

We actually caught ours on the inside (right, apex) of turn 11, the one right before Oak Tree. A much slower car during a practice on Saturday initially gave us the apex to go by, but then at the last second appeared to change his mind and pinched down on us pretty sharply, so we went off to the right to avoid any contact. Our splitter caught the curbing and that was it. Oh well.....

Yeah, I'm thinking about doing the same thing. If you include a bumper, Evo splitter (just the heavy plastic ones, not the mega-bucks carbon ones), dive planes and other misc stuff - the total cost is well over $1300. For a part that frequently takes the brunt of stuff, I'm having a hard time justifying a super fancy setup. I may just buy a replacement bumper and see what I can make myself. What a silly, expensive hobby this is.....

Denis,

I believe Bimmerworld subsidizes replacement dive planes for somewhere around cost. Give 'em a call
