Slot Loading iPod Tape Deck Replacement [E39]

I've always dreamed of doing this and when I saw it done on youtube, I knew I had to do it.

I promptly removed my tape deck from the center console and got to work.

I will be removing most of the tape mechanism, coating an iPhone sized area with felt so that it doesn't get scratched and running a DICE Silverline into a dock positioned at the end of the tape area.

Here's where I've gotten so far (damn those little screws are in tight...)

Update 12/20 - Ordered Dice Silverline. Its ready to roll as soon as I get the module.

    reserved

Since the tape hole is just BARELY large enough for the 3G iphone (although the old one fit through fine, weird...) I had to bust out the knife and shave down the opening. I'll sand it later, I promise.

I removed all the internal components (what a pain in the ass) and made enough space for a slot loading holster case. I fitted it loosely and tried everything out... slides right in!

Used a knife (yeah I know I know) to drill a hole in the side for the iPod cable.

So, um, it fits. I reinstalled my business tape today just to make sure I hadn't destroyed anything in my hacking and gutting. It works! Unfortunatly I was sent the wrong DICE connection type (trunk rather than radio) so I have to sort that out before this will start working.

If using a 3G phone, what will you do when an incoming call comes in?

I'd recommend using a dedicated iPod instead.

I'm actually wondering this as well. As a rule of thumb, I don't take calls in the car (its illegal in WA State) but how does DICE work with calls on the iPhone?

The DICE will mute the audio from the iPod portion and allow the iPhone to be a phone. No audio is present through the system while in telephone mode.

The project is awesome, just use a dedicated iPod as a cartridge instead of an iPhone.

Added some very ghetto updates. All I need now is my stinkin' correct DICE unit and its getting ready to roll. I'm going to break the locking pins off the iPod cable so that it can be removed without having to open the dash to press the pins together.

Thanks for the kind words thusfar, I'll be sure to keep you all updated.

I had a thought on this, why not wrap it time with electrical tape or use a zip tie so you don't have to break off the pins.

Because then it won't fit into the iPod?

I'm still waiting on my replacement DICE so the project is on hold

just subscribed to see what happens with your project. it looks awesome.

ive seen it on youtube and loved it straight away. im thinking of having a go myself as i am having the alpine ida-x100 fitted next week and thought it would make sense to make use of the factory tape deck.

although once i get it going (will see how yours goes first) i want to mod it a bit to make it more secure. a couple of my family are into metalwork and i am goin to use the tape deck as a basis but get them to put something similar together that is set back in a little bit with room to put a cover on the front to hide any devices you have plugged in. think this will work?

what i did was file them down to round shapes instead when I built my flashlight area dock. They still work to help retain the connector in the ipod but don't prevent you from removing it.

how are you going to hold the ipod and connector in place? or is this more like a hidden storage bin solution

Halston, the replacement DICE I received had the wrong harness again At least this one works. Its not my 1st priority right now so I've put it on the backburner but I'm going to try one more swap, and then just buy the R17 harness outright from EAS.
