Headgasket is toast and the head was warped like a banana so it's upgrade time. The old gasket was pretty dried up and knew it was on it's way out. On the dyno it was pressurizing the cooling system but still ran o.k and long enough to smoke a 335i w/exhaust and reflash by 10 cars
Head studs and new gasket are on the way, I have an extra head to throw on and I will back in action
Here's how it sits now....waiting.....

Neat, never knew M30s had timing chains.
When will the race gas dyno happen?.
Hopefully you'll have it back on the road and boosting quickly! Good luck.
all those wires hurt my eyes.

yeah it sucks and BMW only recommends something like 0.012" max taken off and the head is junk. I used to know the specs from the head deck to the top, but yeah its almost impossible to not get a warped M30 head. 0.015" sucks because you can take down 0.012" and get the replacement size gasket, but its still 0ut 0.003" which is what BMW specs as requiring the head be milled lol.
You can't win!
From what Ive read its mainly only the older heads that had warping/cracking issues. I overheated my b35 head a long time ago(way over heated, thermostat broke) , blew the head gasket. Got it decked and its the head Ive been running ever since. I think they did a better job on there last casting.
Just remembered too, on my current head gasket, not too long ago my water pump seal went south(I run only water and didn't have enough Water Wetter for lubrication I think), car overheated past 3/4 on the coolant sensor before I got it stopped. Had it towed home, head + head gasket had no issues.

Interesting theory. I ran my E28 535i into the red - buried into the red. Water pump esploded, long story short I let it cool down while I went into a hotel for a sales seminar. Was ~40*F outside, car was ice cold when I came out. I was right near the highway, hopped on the highway and ran it to ~130 mph, whch buried the needle in the red, and killed the ignition and coasted in neutral till the temp gauge came back down, and did it again for about 12 miles till I got home. Mine was fine
Otis, I like your repair speed
Ken, you're crazy, and crazy lucky.
you're lucky - period. There's no magic about it, those heads warp and crack the worst of any BMW. I too have over heated the crap out of my former M50, and then boosted it for 25k miles without issue, but an M30 even without sustaining overheating, oftentimes will warp the head. I have helped friends years ago on their E28s and we've taken warped heads off completely 100% stock cars that they've owned forever and never overheated.
The other thing thats frequent in peoples confessions is "I drove my 535 _____ miles after the ____ failed." Those cooling systems sux0r!!
Dang, you guys don't mess around over there.
I have never had any over heating problem in any m30 powered car. Never had a warped head. Ran my e34 boosted at Mid Ohio for 150 miles with the stock cooling system. No issues.
Generalizing about the quality of an engine based on what some friends experience is what makes the internet bad.
It's also the easiest cooling system to bleed in my experience. Takes about 2 minutes. Maybe I am just lucky. Then again MLS gasket work for me too.

The older heads are not the same as the newest b35 head.
"The wall thickness is 8MM on the early ones and 13MM on the later ones. The still later ones have holes for water passages, instead of the slots like the earlier ones. These are the best and most resistant to cracking, but it still happens sometimes, particularly with reactor equipped cars. "
Here is a link that shows some of the issues with the older heads:

I can't wait to see some videos of that car running big boost!
