Looking to buy E39. Any advice?

Hey guys. I am very new to BMWs but have always liked the looks of the E39. I want to buy a 540i just for the fact it is a V8 and I want something different to work on. I currently have a modded out 2003 S281 GT and am wanting something a little rarer around town so to speak. Looking for more of a comfortable ride around town but still be able to hang with the big dogs around here. My GT is rough, has a clutch that I have to leg press, and it is extremely loud haha. I still love it, all 500hp of it, but I am ready to move on I think.

So here are my questions:

What are some things to look out for when looking at a 540i for purchase?

Any inherit problems?

I guess I am just looking for some general advice.

So after reading around...seem their are some general issues that happen as the 540 gets older. Could someone post a list of the main ones or link to a thread where it has been covered?
