Undeniably, the UUC short shift kit is amazing. The "click" into gear and relaxing arm-on-rest throw really make you drool, however the $350 price tag turns people away... quickly. I decided to try another route before installing my UUC SSK in my project. So, I bought an e60 545i short shifter. It's becoming a pretty popular mod for the e39 540i guys so I thought "what the hell."
Just in case anyone was interested in how it matches up with the stock e34 540i shifter. I took a pic:
It's pretty close the UUC except it doesn't have the adjustable height (which I'd love it to have). When bolted up to the 6 speed it feels great, I was impressed. When paired with an extra-weighted UUC DSSR and weighted shift knob it's amazing.
The part goes for about $40 from BMA. Patrick had said he's never had anybody order one for the E34. P/N is 25 11 7 546 373.
I just thought I'd let you guys in on the e39er's find. I had no idea the e60 545i's had a short shift option.

Just to check, this would work for a 535/5 also wouldn't it? I don't see why not but that's just me.
That is pretty cool though.
so your telling me to call patrick at bma, tell him i want a short throw for an e60 545 and i can purchase it for $40 and its a direct fit!?
if so i'll order one today, are they open on sunday?

I saw this first person yesterday while hanging out with Mac. Definitely a great shifter and the price is unbelievable.

The e60 545i's had normal shifters and short shifters so make sure you mention it has to be short (if not ordering by P/N).
Also, $40 seems a little low. I need to have a re-look at my receipt and see. I'm thinking it was more like $50-55.
I'll report back in an hour or so.
you dont knowhow much you paid for it? lol

Good option. The big thing that you miss out on compared to the UUC setup is that the stock shifters get sloppy after a while.
Nice find though!

I just cut the top of my stock shifter off, and re-notched it.
Alot shorter and it feels good. Plus it was free!

So does this work with a 535i/5 or am I out of luck?
I own mostly junk. Except the Porsche, that's kind of cool.

Is this a e34 540 only mod or any e34 w/ a manual?
The e39/e34 540i used the same shifter as the e34 535i. And when I say same, I mean same part number; same exact shifter.
btw, What all has to come out in order to install a short shifter? I made the mistake of not buying one when I did my clutch ... if the exhaust and all has to come off, then my car is gonna have to wait oh ... another 100k miles for it.
It's not a direct fit in terms of knob placement. I use them on my tourings. It's the shortest thing you can get from the factory that will clear the large giubo and still work on the shift console.
The E60 part looks to fit properly, even if it is a little longer in terms of shift movement.
