Thumbs up Removing the buffer in the stock temp gauge

i finally did it. i was tired of not knowing my actual temps on the track.

i think it will only work on cars that use 2 seperate temperature sensors. (OBD 1)
i replaced the sensor the cluster uses for a direct fit VDO unit and replaced the factory gauge driver with a VDO vision gauge driver.

now you can see the temperature fluctuate as you sit in traffic and get moving again.

is there any interest for a writeup with pictures?

here we go. this is how i modified my gauge cluster in both my cars. it worked for me.

this requires you to be gentle and patient. it worked for me twice.

i bought the gauge and the sender from www.egauges.com the sender is an M14 sender.

if anybody needs me to expand on a task, post here.

pins 17 and 18 must be removed from the blue connector and wraped up in electrical tape

Nice write-up and great idea. Also, it was nice meeting you at RRT Saturday...I was the guy talking spring rates/sizes with you and Greg L.

Nice David...is there potential to use the VDO gauge face on the stock bezel? Instead of paint-marking the bezel?

Great work David! I wonder if I can do that with mine, since I no longer have the second Coolant Temp sensor on my OBDI S52.

Can't wait till we both can get the M3's back out there next year!

you would have to get the head tapped. i would suggest tapping a 1/8 NPT thread since an M14 thread would have to be perfect to work with a crush washer.

i hate working without a lift.

Great job but I wonder if there is an easyer way like this guy made on his toyoya. The mod is very simple, just replace a diode and a resistor.
