S38 Headwork

Sent my head to Metric Mechanic and they have been sending me some progress pics of whats been done so far. I'm getting a 31mm port on the intake side, enlarged ported throttle bodies, and a 288° intake cam and an e28 M5 exhaust cam (256° i believe). Just some pics So far.

Maching the cam box to fit the intake cam

Head porting

Stock on right, port on left

Wow looks like a serious project! Any ideas on what the expected increase in hp and torque should be? I bet you cant wait to get it back...mines been out of service for a while now too so I know how frustrating it is. Good luck and keep us posted!

is this one of their package engine deals that they advertise in the various magazines? Keep us posted, i've thought of going that route when needed too. Seems like a lot of engine for a decent price.

The ports are only 2mm bigger than stock, so there using stock valves but re doing the seats, but thats as big as you wanna go cause after that you come really close to coolant lines and oil lines. Also with the 288° intake cam i'm getting higher yielding springs for the valvetrain as well. Its a estimated 25-27 % increase in air flow, and im running standalone so ill be able to fully take advantage of the mods when im tuning. I cant wait to start road tuning this setup ! I was running roughly 365 hp this past summer, so with this setup im hoping for to break 400. Maybe 410 hopefully.

What other mods besides standalone do you have? I'd love to get some more out of mine, just not sure where to start. My friend, who is my indy, has been talking of a twin turbo setup as a winter project, just not sure I am ready for that lol..he just set up a sweet brake package, 750 rotors with 911 turbo calipers! They look pretty sweet and he totally hooked me up with the price.

Wow! Your car is going to be an absolute beast after this! Not that it wasn't already.

That whole mod list makes me drool. Very tasteful car you've got there.

Great work! How has your experience been with dealing with Metric Mechanic? How has there pricing and customer service been? That is if you don't mind me asking, just for future reference.
Eric.

Iv had an great experience with Metric. The owner Jim Rowe is incredibly knowledgeable and the staff there is great. Anything i wanted to know he had an answer for, and he gave me valid answers and told me not only how certain applications work but also why they work. He knows alot of theory and has alot of engine building and racing experience and knows how to build great motors. I cant wait to see what this new setup will give me. The pricing is fair, they werent the most expensive but they werent the cheapest either. They use good parts and provide quality work, and for the pricing i got a think it was a great deal. I got a fully built head with new valve springs and cams, and ported throttle bodies and ported intake ports for about 5500. That also includes new piston rings and connecting rod bearings that i got as well to redo the rings in my bottom end.

I almost took my heads to metric mechanic, but instead I had them worked locally. Looks like things are moving smoothly. I haven't taken a single picture of my engine

I am very impressed with the service from metric, i had a great experience over all. I decided to send it to them because they have been building and racing S38 and S14 motors since they first came out, and they know it like none other. I have no doubt my engine once tuned will be a beast and a blast to drive. AND found a local dyno in my city Getting it there ASAP
