DIY Coil on plug conversion w/ electrical diagram for m42/m44 cars

alright here are the things you'll need for the conversion:
    1. mounting plate for the coils.
you can buy it here. i bought the plate & hardware from him & everything was nice & all there. the only i had to do was clean up the center hole where the coil goes through w/ a small grinding wheel so all of them fit in nicely. other than that, it's just plug & play there.

    2. 4 coils.
i bought used coils & plug boots on ebay that was really cheap (do a search on 1 748 017). these coils come on lots of bmw's. here's what it looks like:

you're looking for these w/ the 2 mounting arms (not the square ones since you don't have enough room for the square ones - it will hit the wiring harness & valve cover). also for me, i had to modify the #1 cylinder coil (#1 coil is the closest to the front of the vehicle - and it's sequential as it goes rearward so #4 is the closest to the firewall). i had to cut off part of the mounting arm since it was hitting the valve cover. not a big deal w/ a cut off wheel.

    3. coil wire harness (see light blue arrow in last pic)
again i bought one from ebay that was for an e36 6cyl. it should look like this:

i pulled the harness apart & only used the 4 plugs & the wiring. i recut & taped the wires to the lengths that i want so it'll fit on the coils in position on plate the way i wanted. (you can see it in the last pic). remember to label the #1, 2, 3, 4 ignition wires since it won't be the same color as the 4 cylinder wires.
when i modified the harness i spliced all of the green wires from the harness together & had 1 wire run to the end. and same for the brown wires (i kept the ring connect that came w/ the harness). so after modifying the harness it should have 5 wires to be connected to the original coil pack wire harness & the ring connect to be grounded to the body/engine.

    4. 6 pin oem style harness plug (optional) (see red arrow in last pic)

since i have a friend that works for a wire harness supplier, i was able to get an oem plug & connectors for free. you can get something similar from summit or jegs but it's kinda expensive.
you can splice the coil harness directly to the coil pack harness that's in the engine compartment (i used the harness plug so i can unplug & go back to the coil pack if anything ever happens). from now on i'll refer to the coil harness that i got off of ebay as (harness a) & the original coil pack harness as (harness b).
here's the wiring diagram (make sure you verify the wire colors of harness b on your vehicle in the bentley):

    installation:

    1. install the plate onto the valve cover (make sure the spark plug connector will reach the coil after installation).

    2. plug harness onto the coils 1st & install the coils onto the plate. i started w/ the back one (#4) & worked towards the front of the car.

    3. install the brown wire ring. the brown wire ring is normally connected to a stud on the valve cover but since i didn't see anything that's really accessible, i used the stud that originally held the coil packs in place on the fender (see yellow arrow in pic below).

    3. hook up the green wire between harness a & b.

    4. hook up the coil trigger wires between the wire harness a & b. as you can see in the wiring diagram coil #1 is white, #2 is red, #3 is yellow, #4 is blue.

    5. crank the car over & test it out.

***I WOULD RECOMMEND NOT MAKING EVERY ELECTRICAL CONNECTION BETWEEN HARNESS A & B PERMANENT W/OUT TESTING 1ST.
AND I WOULD SOLDER THE CONNECTIONS AFTERWARD IF GIVEN A CHOICE (SO IT WON'T CORRODE OR VIBRATE FREE OVER TIME).

GOOD LUCK...and pm me if you have any questions.

eliminate the coil module & the $180 replacement plug wires that goes from the coil module to the spark plugs on m42/m44 cars.

you need to pull the wiring harness that you just bought apart & splice the wires to the old wire plug. let me know if you have more questions...

    could anyone read the letters?

If i make the wiring something sould be clearer i think so...

Today i finished the COP conversion.
Its quite simple. took more hours as i thought but at all everything was clear...

The wires from the car are
    Blue(4) Yellow(3) Red(2) and White(1)
and the wires from the 6zylinder
half blue - half black, half yellow - half black, half red - half black and half white- half black...
you dont have to be an elektrican und build the cop self...

    i will post pictures

    Dodge Dakota Coil on Plug

Can anyone help me.. The connector to my coil was broke so I wasnt getting fire to my plug. So I cut off connector and spliced the wires and pluged them into coil and it worked fine. I order the connector and when i hooked up wires to connector and plug it in to coil i get no power.. I use the mulit meter to test wires there fire, but when i plug it in to coil no fire... I plug coil into another connector and the coil fires just fine. Can anyone please help me....
