UPDATE 2/17/2010
Machine shop got the order this week. Expecting 4-6weeks for delivery.
Cost has gone up - now $70 a set shipped.
Taking names for now and will take payment when I have a firm delivery date.
This spring, I complete the shift pin service on the transmision and have been very happy with the improvement in ease of shifting.
I had the set of drifts made at a local machine shop and since then a couple of other people have enquired about the tools.
The actual pins/sleaves/caps are approx $50 and you of course need to drop the trans.
The two types of service are detailed here.

If you can get single-sided drifts made for $60, I'll take a set. I had my father mocking some up in SolidWorks some time back, but he doesn't have much free time to spend in the machine shop at work lately. What material would the drifts me made from?
The drifts are just mild steel. I was able to use the double ended drifts with a plastic malet with no problem.
The single ended drifts should be even better.
Are there any other choices for materials? Mild steel is probably fine for as much action as these would see, but I am curious.
I'll check on cost of other materials.
I'd be interested in a set for that cost. I have been noticing more notches in my shifter lately and would like to be prepared in the future. Keep us updated, thanks!
Me too.

I'd probly be down for a set aswell...
$60 shipped? I don't think that I could have a set made here (with my current contacts) for much less... plus it would save me the trouble...
I'm down for that.
I'm doing science and I'm still alive...
Ok so that's 6 names so far.
I'll check with the shop and confirm pricing.
Put me down as a maybe.
I am interested as well. I am having the 2nd problem to which you linked; the "shifter not returning to neutral position from the 5th gate" problem.
I am bound to need a clutch soon, and I was planing on fixing this problem when I pulled the transmission for the clutch replacement. How hard is it to do this fix with the transmission out (with your tools?)

It's pretty much impossible to replace the pins without at least some of the drifts.
You can get the caps back on with almost any "blunt object" of a suitable size, but the problem is the "sleeves" that you are installing need to be installed to a particular depth and take quite a bit of force to insert into the case. The 5th and reverse sleeves in particular are very thin but also a tight fit, the drifts have to very precise, the shoulder that the sleeve rests on is < 8 hundredths of an inch.
