I'm telling you man, that blood-curdling screetch the car made and the smoke are all indicative of the CCV... dont know why it makes the sound but it does, mine too eventually went away and came back and went away. save yourself all the guessing and change it out.

^ Is that all I need or do I need to order any other part? do I order the intake manifold gaskets aswell ?
do 'em while you're in there. consider a valley pan gasket and coolant return pipes as well.
ok this is what im getting, anything else I should do while im there?

I have the valley pan with the cover/gaskets and 4 o-rings for the pipes. I took mine apart, and it wasnt leaking so I decided to leave it alone.
This + This and the 4 o-rings (not on the website, I'll just throw them in there since I bought everything brand new and have no use for it) I'll get it to you for $80 shipped =) PM me if interested
What is your build date? Your oil separator is in front of the engine. It's the part known for causing oil to get into your intake.

CCV is #2 here, no?
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...37&hg=11&fg=40
If I'm not mistaken the oil separation is done with number 1 here.

I'm somewhat confused. On the older cars I thought the head gases go through that first and then through the rear cover. I didn't think the newer cars had that. On the newer cars the pipe from the head goes to the number #2 that you are showing. I am seeing the same part number for both the newer and older cars for that rear cover though.
I have sold quite a few of the #1 that I listed above for the older cars though I do not see it on my car.

I don't have one in mine either. My vendors and BMW both list it as a part on all 540s through 8/98. I'm lost...

Im gonna take the part number that's used by mostly every as the CCV(1161 7 501 563)

Yeah dude, thats what you have.
Dont believe the realoem. Jared, Al and I are all missing the funky separator that's supposedly is in the front, but I can personally tell you I replaced the one on the back and it was leaking oil like a mofo - my manifold runners were drenched in oil and it was sucking into the intake ports on the head.
Im assuming it's so bad on yours, that it actually gets past the ports and thru the valves right into the cylinders. When you take everything apart and see oil, get lots of paper towel and carb cleaner, hose the $hit off of the manifold and try to get it clean as much as yu can with paper towels. Then wet the towels with carb cleaner and clean the intake ports like here
From this (notice sludge)

Dont save paper, spray carb cleaner on one sheet, wipe the port from inside out and throw it out, use the next one in the same manner untill the paper comes out clean (nothing black on it AT ALL) 1 roll of towel and 30 mins later all 8 of them will be clean, do the same with the manifold ports, eccept with that you can spray the carb cleaner right in there and let it run off into the bucket or something
I believe you.
I'm not trusting realoem, I'm just using them for links. I have an account with BMW. I can look up part number using the same system the dealers do. I just can't post a link since it is a password protected site.
I agree. The rear cover has a diaphragm that breaks down and lets "oiled" gases enter your intake. It makes everything real nasty.

Like I said, this should do everything. It IS worth doing your valley pan as it will be real visible once your intake comes off. It's up to you if you want to replace the valley pan cover. It does get brittle with time.
Price is shipped and you'll probably have it the next day after payment.

Ok.....well me and my brother changed the CCV, and the smoke from the tailpipe is still there.
We took the CCV off, and sure enough the cover had oil residue, and we couldn't get the hoses off of this 3 pipe valve, and ended up breaking off a piece, but JB welded it to test it out to see if the smoke went away.
We turned it on, and the smoke was still there. And we kept turning it off then on, and every single time, there would be smoke. The smoke is like a whitish-light blue color, and goes away after the initial start, and when the engine is rev'ed, smoke comes out.
Soooo....now im really stumped. Im going to buy the E39 book, and gonna open the engine up and see what I find, and if needed, a full engine rebuilt is gonna go down.
Well just a little update, the car has been sitting in my driveway for a week now, im waiting for the dealership to get that 3 way non-return t-valve (125 bucks for that POS?!)
But I know that valve isjust for the braking system and isn't really a big issue now.
Anyways, either today or tomorrow me and my brother are going to do a compression test to see if theres low compression on one of the cylinders to see check if the head-gasket is blown for sure.
I turn the car on and theres always whitish-light-bluish smoke at start, and the engine vibrates a little, and has a rough idle, and when it's revved, more smoke comes out. I already replaced the CCV, so maybe that was out, but theres something else wrong too.
I really hope I find out what's wrong with it soon, and hopefully it's not the head gaskets.
