I just picked up a 97 318i recently and it has the dreaded "humm" coming from the front suspension. NOT bad (yet), but I'm almost certain it's the front wheel bearings. "May" be the tires (need replaced) though.
Q: Are the front wheel bearings on the 3-Series repackable/replaceable like on most other rear wheel drive vehicles ? Or are they the integrated PITA ones like on FWD vehicles ?
Any "How-To" Articles/Diagrams available on any websites to replace front wheel bearings on 3 Series ?
TIA
The front wheel bearings are integrated with the hubs. They are pretty easy to change. It should take you about 2 hours.
Here's my thread about changing bearings: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...d.php?t=912380
One tip:
Use the puller, not a slide hammer to get the front hubs off. The front spindles are hollow, though. This means that the threaded shaft of the puller will fit inside the spindle.
Get a deep socket and slide that down into the hollow middle of the spindle. That will give the threaded rod of the puller something to push on.
Don't forget to take the socket out of the spindle when you're done
