Anyone know how to gut out an e36 m3 muffler? locally? (Fairfax)

I was wondering if anyone knows how to gut out an e36 m3 stock muffler. I know it requires cutting and re-welding. Anyone done it before? I'm looking for someone to do it for me. Thanks.

Cut the top off, cut the baffling out, weld the top back on. Only issue (I would assume the M3 is the same as a 328) is that the exhaust is stainless and not all welders can do stainless.

I gutted my M3 muffler. I used a plasma cutter to cut the top off, cut out all the internals, and had my brother weld it back up. It looks stock visually too, so you won't be hassled with the inspection. Welding it is a bit tricky though because the metal is pretty thin.

    After cutting a little bit:

After gutting the whole thing and welding back up:

Not the prettiest, but it gets the job done.

They can, they just dont look as good, and they will rust if you dont have stainless wire, in which case it will rust.

Sure PM me. If you can just bring me that section of the exhaust, I can probably do it quickly in an afternoon.

I believe there is a decibel level requirement. I don't think they really check for it as long as your car isn't ungodly loud. I take no responsibility if I do this and your car doesn't pass inspection FYI.

Heh. My Miata is ridiculously loud for what it is (I actually hate going WOT on the street as a result), and it passes just fine. It's around 94DB at 50 feet.

hmm I'm not sure I want to drive in nova with no exhaust since cops suck.

it would only take me a second to drop it though.

I have a spare stock one if i really needed it.

I've got a stock '98 M3 catback that's currently cut open, with guts removed, and perforated tubes ready to be installed. I won't be using it (went with Borla cat back instead).

I'm located near Richmond if anyone wants to work a deal for my gutted stock catback.

Sorry never got back to you. I'd prefer it to be dropped off since It's an involved process. Can you borrow someone else to drive you to and from?

You could do like I've done a few things where you drop off the car and I do it in my spare time. But since I have to remove the exhaust and stuff like that, the hours I spend to do the gutting goes up. IE it's better for your wallet to drop off just the exhaust.

If you drop it off I can probably tackle it in like 3 hours or less. If you drop off the car, at least 4 hours. ya no?

PM me if you really want to work something out.

I do cheap misc welding on the side. Anyone who wants anything done is welcome to ask me. PM me what you want done and we'll see about working something out.

Not sure my ability is that high. I also don't have enough space at my house. If you can get the old one off and new one tacked into place, I can probably bring my rig by and finish up the rest. Hope you have bondo ready :-p

It sounds good. Perfect for me. It's pretty quite at low rpms, but when you floor it it can get pretty rhaspy.

My gutted exhaust actually belonged to the OP

If the weather is nice tomorrow, I will set up my camera and do a drive by.
