1991 - 1999 (E36) (1991 - 1999) The first modern 3 Series, the E36, was the model that paved the way for the 3 Series to be named "Car of the Year" every year since the model was driving off showroom floors. Radically redesigned in 1992, the E36 was not the same 3 Series as the E21 and E30. Larger, less boxy in design, and equipped with a dual overhead cam engine, multilink rear suspension, and a more finished interior, the E36 balances sport with luxury.

built my own intake this weekend.....

Its pretty sweet for only having spent about $5 for the parts for the intake and about $10 for making the heat shield. I can thank seed for some help figuring out what kind of parts to use. But its an awesome idea if you don't want to spend $200 and up for intake and shield.

You are telling me you got all your parts for only $15 dollars? I want to see a parts list of everything you used, because I would like to build one and am quite crafty, but do not know what I need.

Oh ya, what were you thinking not posting any pics? Did you not see the flashing warning lights and the sirens??? Post, post, post!!!

I am actually thinking about geting the Dinan intake ($400) but do not know if it comes with an airbox and heat shield, and they do not have email on there webpage only phone numbers. I am afraid of phones...

Hyperion, with the DInan CAI the airbox is removed. When it is installed the filter sits so far below the engine behind the light assembly that a heat sheild is not necessary. However there is a type of sheild that covers it, not sure if it is insulated to protect from heat. I love my, sounds great.

Ya, I went back over to Dinan's websight and did some more research and found that out. But what are they thinking not providing E-mail? That is the number one way I do business, and it has made me reconsider whether I am going to be purchassing there products.

If I buy a Dinan product from a company other than Dinan will they still recognize the points that I should earn for the rear badge, or not? It is an intresting system they thought up, but makes people only want do do business with them, I do not like that, I like to shop around to see who has the best price.

if you want best price on aftermarket products for our cars...whenever you see the word DINAN...do a full 180 and run as fast as you can...i hate DINAN bigtime...of course, everyone is entitled to their own opinion though.

I value your oppinion, and would like to hear it. Just like G.I. Joe says, "Knowing is Half The Battle."

Why do you dislike Dinan, they seem to have nice stuff, even if slightly expensive. Even thought detail and quailty are always more expensive.

I also like AA gear, but they just do not appeal to me as much.

pictures in a few days..

I'm gonna need to borrow my friends digital camera for this, so it may be a few days before i get pictures up. heres the parts list and prices.

1 45 degree bend 3" diameter ABS tubing. $2.49
2 rubber sleeves - actually had a couple at my house so, free
4 hose clamps .50 cents a piece.

Heat shield
1 piece of aluminum sheeting. 2'x1' about $5
1 sheet of metallic insulation $8
1 2 foot length of rubber trim $2

thats about all you need plus an air filter. I ordered mine at a local parts store. Of course that was about $50. So the total was $75.

If you buy from an Authorized Distrubutor or Reseller, you get the points. Those that are usually have stickers and/or adverstising stating such.

Hey, for 400$ you might as well buy the Dinan badge. It adds more HP than the CAI!!!

My ECIS heat shield seemed to be letting in too much heat. (not a big difference in temp according to my hand, or maybe I'm not that sensitive). I'm thinking about putting more heat insulation on the heat shield. Any idea what material to use?

Well done, BMW Rollin;

It's a lot easier to throw money than to create your own solutions! I respect you and your approach.

Talking You've inspired me...

For the FUN of it I'm gonna take the plunge. Went to Home Depot recently for Seedsters GP mirror screws and found everything needed is available. A couple 45 degree pvc twists with a straight pipe. No biggie.

BTW NE1 know the Dinan CAI length minus the filter? Also what size K&N is used on the Dinan?

Also I think I'll freak it and custom paint the pipes. Leapord print NE1? How about gun metal blue with chrome accents? Don't laugh, It can happen...

Hey, let us know how the CAI goes, mine sounds really good. It took a couple days for the filter to break in and it sounds incredible when you throttle it. And considering it only cost me $5 to build the intake and $40 for the filter, i'm glad i didn't drop $200 on an ECIS. The heat shield i made is also pretty sweet. You should notice some gains at higher speeds. I get instant pick up at 60 and 70 mph. Post some pics if you can, i'm trying to get my friends dig camera to take some pics. Let us know how it turns out. peace.

What config do you have?

The model I want the replicate is the Dinan. You mentioned a heat shield... for the ECIS type or Dinan type config? Unfortunately I don't have a sample Dinan CAI to take the measurements from (length to twist/straight tube length/overall length), but if someone could provide those I'm sure the the favor would be returned.

BTW heare's a useful links for us DIY'ers:

http://www.unofficialbmw.com/e36/per...uction_cb.html

When complete I will definately post the pics of my sub $100 Dinan knockoff

I have a Dinan CAI comming on about tuesday of next week. I am a really good drafter, and I think I might be able to fix up some scaled drawings of the thing. Only problem is I am oldfashioned. I only use pen and paper, none of that new age CAD stuff, even though I have worked with it. I will see what I can do.

Great!

If you could scan and email the schematic that would be great! Or just jot down dimensions. I'll test different parts from Home Depot and report my findings. Thanks Hyperion!

I just got my CAI. It is way more different than I thought. The filter is not a standard K&N. It is specifically produced for the Dinan. I mean I could give you dimensions and stuff, but they are going to mean diddley squat to you. Your best bet would be to go and pick up a 6in longK&N and custom fit your Air Mass Meter to the pipe your are going to use, and neck it up to the filter you have. If some one else has any better Ideas, please help, it is like the blind leading the blind here.

Each product comes with a certian number of points ( CAI=2). Once you reach 10 points you get the Dinan badge on the back of your car. You cannot buy the badge, you have to earn it.

I rather get one of these: Ebay.com Dinan Licence Plate Frame

That way you are not false advertising, and it still looks good.

Oh ya, you can get them for $100, not $500.

What happened to the pics?

BMW Rollin' - This sounds like something that I'd be interested in doing. Did you ever take any pics of your setup? I'd like to see them to get an idea of what you did. I appreciate the shoppin list that you posted, but pics would be extremely helpful in explaining how to put it all together. Thanks for the inspiration.
