I disagree. I think this is a much more modern and agressive design than both the E39 and E60.
The E39 is a beautiful car, one that I would own any day, especially in Touring form. But you put it against even an E60 and it's presence on the road is just gobbled up. With Mercedes-Benz new E-Klasse out and looking like nothing else, the new 5-Series really needs to be pulling some tricks out of the hat to match it. That design I posted, to me, looks a winner.

The E30 and E36 were very masculine cars. The E46 was feminine. Then when the E9X came out they flipped it back to being a masculine looking car.

Looks like they are doing the exact same thing to the 5er. The E60 is smooth and elegant like the E46 was. But not masculine.

It's nice that they are making the 5 series more agressive looking. The E39 is my favorite 5 series but this new 5 series looks like an angry demon or something. I like it!

Can't wait to see the M5 version of this!

As far as the 5-Series goes I'm still pretty stuck on the E39 styling as being my favorite. It's hard to really make an opinion on the new one until I really see it in person though.

I cannot belive that people think the E60 is not masculine!? It looks like a bouncer at a nightclub!

I think it looks very sleek and probably one of my favorite design parts of the E60. Plus the way it wraps around to the side a bit gives it a lot of personality from even the sides. You cannot mistake it for anything else...Just a shame they made a royal mess of the back.

Whats up BMW making cars look like all the other cars on the market today. The e39 looked amazing and did not follow the styling of other car makers during the 90s but the new Bimmers look like all the other aggressively styled cars on the market.

I do like every thing about the new 5 series except for the ninja styled head lights. I guess I have a thing for round or square headlights.

Yea, the E39 looked good, but for some reason, the E34 M5 (to me) is BMW at its best.

That said, the new 5 looks awesome!

The e39 is the pinnacle of BMW styling right behind the e38.
I don't particularly like rounded off cars.

Can't say how it will be in the flesh, but I agree on the kidneys- they seem to bash you right over the head

This is just a render by Jon Sibal. Its not a leaked image or anything set in stone. It just probably will carry some of these looks because thats the design direction BMW is headed in.

Here is my most recent rendering of the 2011 5er.

This is the base picture I started with.

When cartoon animals attack!

And finally without the vinyl camo…

Yeah, if Dame Edna became a bouncer, maybe...

The new one is a serious step in the right direction (if it looks anything like the rendering)
