OT: Baurspotting

Hi,
I am a BMW enthusiast (E30s, E21s) seeking some forum assistance for a project that we are working on over in the E21 forum. We are trying to identify and locate all the E21 Baurs in the USA. We hope to eventually expand to include the 2002 Baurs as well as the E30 models. We are starting small however.

Initial estimate was that there were 25 E21 Baur TC1s (as they are officially known) in the US, but it now appears that there are probably more like 50-100. No one knows for sure. Yet.

We seek your assistance as eyes and ears in spotting any Baurs in your area.... particularly anyone in the Metro NY area for help with the following car:

This is the car that are currently trying to locate:

The Baurhunter: Have you seen this Baur?

Sept 2009 Merrick NY (Long Island between Hempstead and Jones Beach, roughly) Square headlights. Zypressgrun (green metallic) color, tan interior seat covers, --- are those BBS wheels?---- single tailpipe, NY plates DHA 8816 (at the time), and rear spoiler. License plate surround says " Movin' on".

It was almost 60 degrees here the other day.... The convertibles are coming out of hibernation up north. This may be the ONLY Baur on Long Island, if it still exists. (We have rumors of others, but no definite info.) So, if anyone sees a Baur on Long Island, ...... please contact me (PM, this forum, the E21 forum, email to my blog).

The photo is from a blog by Mark Spizzirri:
http://markspizz.net/?p=424

It has been tentatively identified as having once belonged to Christiane Baur (of the Baur Family), so it may be a car of special significance.

More info is available on my blog that is dedicated to the project:
http://baurspotting.blogspot.com/

Here is a link to a primitive Google map of the cars we have located so far:
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en...0262f15966&z=3

This is a link to the E21 thread chronicling the project:
http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum....php?t=1566814

It has been a really fun project, and any input---- on the car above or ANY other Baur, E21, E30, 2002, etc.---- is most welcome! Please check out those links... some surprising stuff in there.

It is coming on spring, and I know there are tons of E30 owners out there. The convertibles are starting to emerge... I am hopeful that someone out there can give us a hand!

We would be much obliged.

Thanks in advance.

Are there any E30 Baurs in here? Anyone have any production figures for the E30 Baurs? I have heard the figure 10,000 bandied about, but I am curious if anyone has any more definitive info on that.

Thanks.

Nice car, nice website!

Is your car in the International Baur Registry yet? I have link to it on my blog, along with some other great info. I just posted a pic this week of a 4 door Baur TC2!

Baur Guru Jeroen Janssen of The Netherlands (whom you may know of already) started the registry, but has since turned it over to two other enthusiasts. Jeroen has his own sites.... He also now owns two (!!) E30 Baur ix... The AWD version! Since you live in the snowy north, I think you can appreciate that! They only made about 117 (?) of them. I would love to find one on this side of the Atlantic, but I don't think there are any.

Anyway, thanks for chiming in, and it is nice to know that there is another Baur in New England!

There were two TC2s for sale on eBay last week.... One was Canadian. The other one, which was in the US, stated in his ad that a "high ranking BMW" official had told him there were only 11 TC2s, and that his car was very rare.

I tried to explain to him that he may have misunderstood somehow, or gotten erroneous info, because the production numbers for the TC2, as you show on your website, were over 10,000. I was hoping to help him avoid the unpleasant scenario where a prospective buyer would accuse him of misrepresentation on the rarity issue. It is a rare car.... But there are certainly more than 11 of them! Anyway, I got nowhere with him... He stuck to his claim..... And the car did not meet his reserve and didn't sell.
Needless to say, he didn't post my questions in his eBay ad.
Oh, well.

@Tom: the blue or the brown one?

For sure: both are grey import so it's irrelevant to tell that 11 TC2 where brought to the US via the official way.

325iX Baur's are indeed only sold in Europe. Of the 114 build, 21 had an automatic gearbox.

I have the B47095 and B47172, no 34 and 39 build. The 47095 is since 2003 in my possesion, the 47172 since a month.

That looks like Wickham Park in Manchester CT. I was there with my Baur for the Connecticut Valley Chapter show last July.

Wow, thanks for those pics... That car is in the international registry, but I don't think it is listed as a US Baur! It is a 320/6. Great find! And it has CT plates!

Do you know the owner's name or location? I am going to link this over to the e21 forum.... It constitutes a New Find!

Thank you for posting!

It was the brown one... eBay item 180644623404. Lanham MD.

I am not sure I understand your comment on the 11... Do we know how many TC2s were officially imported to the US through dealer channels?

It was Wickham Park. It was the CVC show from 2009, so I don't recall who the owner was. I actually forgot about the show last summer and to request the day off. Otherwise I would have been oogling over your baur

Great info as always, Jeroen!

-A70164: 320i Polaris. Prechter Southgate----- Prechter is the American Sunroof Company.... the folks who apparently did Baur-type conversions here in the US under license from Baur. I would love to find that car.... to compare it to the one rigmaster has down in NC.

-B41392: 323iA Achatgrun. VOB Autosales Maryland (known to exist)----- I believe that would be a connection to Lothar Schuettler in Rockville MD. He was involved with the wide body E21 Baur that we have discussed in the E21 forum recently. He also owns a beautiful 1956 BMW 502 Baur Cabriolet, and many other amazing BMWs in his collection.

-B42293: 325eA US Burgundrot. European Car Company Foergg Wichita (might be the one known with Hartge-stripes)--- I just came across a pic of this one, deep red .... I think.... Alpina stripes, etc. in a post from 2005/6 in Nebraska. That could be it. Trying to track it down. Relatively speaking, Wichita, Kansas is not that far from Nebraska.

Thanks also for the info on the 7/11 issue re: the TC2s.

Only 3 (!!!) TC1s officially imported into the US?? Whoa! Correct me if I am wrong but... we spotted one that was sold down near Norfolk last year, and .... rigmaster has one... that makes two of the three!!??

Is that correct?

Would it be safe to assume that the Baur's sold through US BMW dealers would have "diving board" bumpers and sealed beam US spec headlamps ? They would be easy to spot if listed on E-bay, or Craigslist etc

Ok, I think I misunderstood your earlier post. The TC1s and TC2s that were officially imported were the Baur numbers that you listed. I was wrong about the Norfolk Baur---- although I believe that was on an earlier list that you had---- and about rig master's ASC Baur.

The cars you listed starting with the letter "A" are the Baur TC1s (3 of them) and those starting with "B" are the Baur numbers of the TC2s (7 of them). Those were officially imported to the US.... Any others are 'grey market' cars. Correct?

Great info, thanks Jeroen!

The Other Connecticut Baur
I attended the BMCCA Connecticut Valley Chapter Ice Cream Social held tonight today in my region of Ct. Good turnout 15-20 cars, nice bunch of fellas. I was the only E21, naturally, and, as a Baur, I was kind of a curiosity. Nice Z3 M coupe, a supercharged Z3 M convertible (320 HP), several nice later model M3 and M5s, and an 840. there were no E30s present, something of a surprise to me.

The big news is that I made a contact there who I hope will be able to Put me in contact with the only other known Baur owner listed in CT, a 1978 320i. And I hope he will then contact me, and we can add him to the list of identified Baurs in the US!

This is the Baur that was spotted by Davey101 at a CT BMW event in 2009. It was posted in this thread on 4/3/2011. That BMW event is coming up in early July, so I hope we can make contact, and welcome another Baur member into the fold!

Stay tuned!

Last night I received a call from the owner of the other Baur in CT. Very nice gentleman from northern CT. His car is a silver 1978 320/6, Baur number 0048---- one of the earliest made!

We made a plan to bring our Baurs to the BMWCCA CT Valley Chapter club show (Bring More Wax) on July 10, in Manchester CT! So there will be Two TC1 Baurs in one local show!

Alfonso said his car is registered with the International Baur Registry, so we should be able to get some other pics there!

Welcome, Alfonso! And Thank You, Davey101, for spotting this Baur and posting it to us! Well Done! Perhaps we will see you at Wickham Park on 7/10/2011!!

No, the club moves them around the state. This one was in Colchester, not too far from me.
There were about 10,000 E30 Baurs built, plus about 3,000 more that were built in South Africa under license to Baur. They are still pretty rare item.

Perhaps you can leave a note to this forum, or to my Baur blog, on her windshield, or otherwise charm her into attending the July 10 show in Manchester!! You the Man, Davey101!
