    Driveshaft for 800+ hp?

Guys I am getting ready with my corn fed S52 build and wanted to get some advice on what driveshaft to get that would withstand over 800 hp. I read that stock M3 driveshaft won't live too long at higher power levels and would like to know what should I go with. Is DSS the only off the shelf option here?

its probably the only commercial, 'off the shelf' driveshaft

however numerous people have done better jobs, reducing the number of adapters required (trans, diff), and reducing the cost

you can probably save 1/2 doing it yourself / locally.

Thanks multiplex. Figured a custom chromoly would do the job. Anyone messing with aluminum at these power levels? It's going to a E36.

    Heikki,

We have a few options including a 4130 one piece DSS shaft and a carbon fiber driveshaft. The original DSS part was aluminum but there was a clearance issue due to the larger diameter used in the aluminum shaft.

Yep. There are other shops too like Mark Williams who offer drive shafts from steel to carbon fiber. I just want to learn from others what they've done.

Are you using a 5 or 6 speed? What holt flange in the rear? I have built DS's that will handle 800rwhp all day for a 5 speed and 4 bolt application for the E36 M3. If thats what your looking for PM me.

Haha this is some good info here, my driveshaft is actually being "checked" out by them....I'm supposed to get the report tomorrow.

I tried taking it to a local place, but noone can hook up to the 6 bolt rear flange. This is really pissing me off when I spend $800 for a new shaft.

Is the rear flange just a stock (cv-driveshaft) 6 bolt flange?

If that's the case, I searched high and low in the Midwest a couple of years back for a place that could mate up to it...and the closest place I could find was in TX. Not sure if you're still in need or if sending it 1200+ miles would even be worth your time but PM me if you want the shop info, and I'll dig for it.

Let me tell you. I would never put that shaft back in. What my dislikes are the aluminum couplers that attach the shaft to diff and tranny. The excess vibration caused the bearing in the diff input shaft to go bad. Had to send diff To diffsonline for repair. That alone coast me money.

That shaft is more trouble than it's worth. I remeber posting this question to dss and they said the shaft is not ment to be used for long countinuos high speed driving. If you search you'll find my thread I've posted a year ago.

Ya mine was ok untill about 130 mph. When I went down the strip I stayed in it and trapped at 135mph. That was SCARY shaking.

Just sent a email to Frank to see how it went on the newly installed 9600rpm balancer
