I was at the shop, about to replace the thermostat (which has been stuck open). I inspected my work area, and noticed that the edges of my fan blades were chipped. I didn't think anything of it, and continued on with my work of replacing the stock airbox, and pulling off the thermostat connector.
Here is where I probably made the mistake: I wanted to move the car back, so I turned it on. I hear a rattle come from the engine bay, that gets softer as the rpms settle. So I tapped the gas, and it got louder again. I repeat this once or twice, and the same result. I then give the engine a nice rev, and POW!
Plastic shoots everywhere, I thought for sure I blew the motor (but it was still running) so I shut it of quickly.
Thankfully, my hood was open at the time, as one fan blade shot straight up and knocked the grill out of the hood, and the rest of the blades wrecked havoc on my cooling system:
Sorry for the poor pictures, I only had my phone with me
You can actually see piece of the plastic here, and one of my grills on the ground lol
Crop circles on my radiator
Took out the belts (which I didn't know were had metal wire reinforced) the fan shroud, the fan (of course) and the radiator, which leaked its gut out like a wounded solider.
I think I'm going to do the fan delete now, but I need some help:
I plan on doing a 16" puller fan, but what else would be suggested? Better to be safe than sorry. And Is it ok if I remove my stock pusher fan? (which I'm not sure it works anyhow)
How hard is this to wire up (I'll have my mechanic do it anyhow)

Ah, yes, the joys of owning a BMW.
My old 328... 3rd session into my first track day, kaBOOM!
You sound just as excited as me. Awesome experience huh :roll eyes:
Getting the car home from 120 miles away sure was a joy. Luckily I had two friends with 100 mile towing who were nice enough to get me back to their shop. It was an expensive track day.
Fan delete + Spal puller fan = priceless

Iceman00,
Just curious because I want to make sure I do thorough preventive maintenance. I already have a water pump and tensioner assemblies on the shelf for my 60K maintenance.
What is the mileage on your car?
Might be the fan clutch was seized.. causing the fan to over-RPM which can grenade them. That might explain why your engine was running cold (since you're replacing the thermostat..) same symptom of a stuck open thermostat.

Almost 108K (wow...It feels weird typing that) And I think I was asking for this. It's more a fuction of age than mileage I would think.
Ok, I'm looking at a SPAL electric puller fan, Aluminum radiator, and a 80c fan switch. Anything else? Where do I get brass bleeder screws?
How did you find out about that funny google search thing, Jeremy? A lot of hours on internet?
