BMW Newbie questions

I have about $17,000 to spend....

I've test driven quite a few different cars but the instant I sat in an 06' 325i I was in love.

I am almost positive this is the car I want.

Unfortunately all I hear about is how bimmers are SO expensive to maintain out of warranty, which really worries me as I am a full time college student.

Edmunds.com estimates that maintenance&repairs on the 325 would be about TWICE a G35 and 5x a Civic.

I know I know, they don't feel the same. Ive driven them and the difference is hardly describable as far as I am concerned. But cost to own is an important factor for me.

Anyway. How much should I expect to spend a year on maintaining an 2006 325i with 50k miles?

Thanks guys.

In all honesty, I am not so sure. if edmunds.com say that a bmw costs twice as much to maintain as G35 or 5 times as much as an Civic.. then they obviously did not mention that it probably has twice as less problems as a G35 or 5 times as less problems as a Civic. I've had my bmw for over a year and there has only been 3 things that have gone wrong with it. mind you this is a 18 year old vehicle, a 2006 will most likely not have any problems outside of maintenance with it, and if there are problems, there will most likely be recalls to fix them free of charge

Well that is reassuring, but why does everyone think that bimmers are so expensive to own?

Parts are expensive, shop rates are more expensive. Id definately enjoy the "luxury" of owning a newer BMW and I probably would buy one. But your statistics are about right, a Honda is pretty damn reliable for the price!

Yeah, the figures are probably accurate, unfortunately.

It's not a Civic. (Thank the Bavarian gods)

Ya wanna dance, ya gotta pay the piper. Get one with a warranty.

Wink

It is all relative man. With $17k I would buy the best example you can leaving yourself $1k to $1500 in reserve "just in case".

I used to think BMW's were expensive too, until I bought a Ferrari. Now I love my BMW because parts are so cheap.

On the other hand, Honda parts are very cheap, but driving a Honda is not driving a BMW. If that is the model you fell in love with, get it checked out and buy it. Life is short. Enjoy.

1 Post and you claim to have a Ferrari? How about a make and model, or a pic, there are plenty of people who claim to have all these things, if they didnt it wouldnt be the internet... Find a Ferrari forum to talk about your imaginative car, at least they will be able to decipher the lies lol

LOL, first of all, I am 41 not 20 like many of you on this forum; and secondly stop being such a dick.

My daily is my silver 1997 BMW M3/4. My Ferrari is a 1983 QV (42443). March build date.
Go to youtube - never mind here are the links - I recently had a Magnaflow installed and it sounds great. I put two threads up there about two months ago when I had the new pipe put on it. It sounds sweet. One is blipping the throttle, and one is me coming up the hill.

I live in NoVa so if you are ever in the area we can hook up and I will give you a ride. Getting a 308 now is pretty cheap (~30k) but maintaining them costs a ton. I just spent the last few hours with a friend of mine pulling out the Veglia clock to send to another Fchatter in GA to freshen up. If you have any further doubts, just head over to Fchat and look up MBFerrari, that would be me. Plenty of pics there for you of my car as well.

I had a 348SS but had to sell it to free up the cash so I got a 308QV. You can see a pic of my 348SS (now sold) on my site www.whitehorseautoconcierge.com

If you have any further questions feel free to PM me and I will give you my phone # so we can discuss. I understand that you guys probably get a bunch of teenagers around here on this site claiming all this junk (we get the same trollers on Fchat doing the same garbage), but be careful before you throw stones blindly, you just may hit someone that you wished you hadn't.

As far as the OP goes, I was just telling him that life is short, and I think he should buy the best example he can and go for it. I did it with my BMW M3 and now with a Ferrari. Life is very short, and we need to live it to the fullest. I wasn't trying to be condescending or be an ass, just saying that parts for my Ferrari are insanely expensive (had to buy two Targa top latches for the 308 at $299 EACH - freaking joke for a stupid latch) so now when I start working on my BMW, heck, I can get an lot of stuff for $600, right?

I joined this forum because my E36 is driving me crazy with the brake light failure codes, and because this is the third BMW I have owned. I was actually concerned that the guys on Fchat were going to be assholes, and they turned out to be a pretty good bunch of guys. I guess maybe I guessed wrong on the forum, eh Chad?

Hey "classact"...just a few of my friends from fchat posting that they also own Ferraris. They asked me over on Fchat how many posts I needed to have to be allowed to own one?

I guess that would be 1.

Sorry Kockney, didn't mean to hijack the thread. Back to your question - I really believe that you can do this, but you have to have a passion for the marque.

As a full time college student you have plenty of other bills to pay right now and a BMW is either a priority in your life or it isn't. Do you want to be able to buy the extra beer for the "kegger" you guys are having or would you rather spend it on shock tower mounts? "You dig"? (as my Uncles who grew up in the 70's would say).

I knew a few guys back when I was in college that had them. My first car and the one I had through college was a 1984 Dodge Colt Turbo, which I am now buying from a guy in CO 20 years later (not sure if it is the exact car, lol) because I had so much fun in it I wanted it back.

Now that I own a BMW and a Ferrari my perspectives haven't really changed. I love my M3 and my 308QV, but I have a passion for both cars so it makes it easy to forego a few other things for the cars because every time I sit in one of them, it brings a smile to my face.

Exact amounts for maint are difficult to say, but I would say for a 2006 325 you should put away about $1000 a year for maint. You probably won't need that much if the previous owner was a halfway decent owner, but I have learned in my business not to assume that...ever.

If you decide to pull the trigger, just make sure you get a "BMW" guy (not just any mechanic) to PPI it for you, and as I said before, go for it!!!

Do I get some sort of prize for having over 90 posts and having a Ferrari to go along with my BMW E30 M3? I also have a E36 vert, and I had an E36 with a M70 V12 swap as well.

The Ferrari is a '79 308 GTS. This is prior to CIS fuel injection that came out the next year and hence has four Webers sitting on top of everything . Bit of a project though. Currently chasing an ignition problem.
