Hey guys - here is a video I made. Ignore my stupid rambling I was trying out this new camera. You can see what I did by mistake. I just got Pinnacle HD to edit this files so excuse the newbness of the video.

I just wired an m50tu harness like two weeks ago and it was batch fire. The harness was out of a 94 525i.

Really? How did you determine this? I mean, my car only has 2 different color wires for 6 injectors... but I recall each wire going to the ECU separate (factory ecu), I think.

For the longest time cars ran in wasted spark/batch injection. Cars still do. What that means is, we all know cylinder 1 and 6 are mechanically paired. Well 1 and 6 move together but are at opposite ends of the cycle - intake and exhaust. So when in wasted spark, you fire coils #1 and #6 at the same time, but only the cylinder under compression ignites, the other is in the exhausting stroke and thus the "wasted" spark. Its easy because you don't need a cam signal - you just need RPM and a TDC mark on the crank wheel.

Batch injection is the same theory but less granular. Instead of firing injectors 1 5 3 6 2 4, it just fires 123, 456, 123, 456, etc. This is again because you don't need a cam signal.

The prob with this is that your fueling may not be very "clean" - I've been running my car in wasted spark/batch fuel since my MS days - its easy and it works fine. But with 1000cc injectors you may have too much fuel piling up if trying to batch fire. Sequential gives you better throttle response, better idle, and better economy. Sequential spark isn't really necessary IMHO and I don't think I'll notice much, but what is nice is that you are only dwelling one coil at a time - this means less current draw, more even running. The complexity is that you need a cam position sensor so that the engine not only knows when TDC is (it gets that from the crank wheel), but you also need to know when #1 TDC is. If you think about it, the crank hits TDC twice once for #1 and once for #6 - but you really need to set the "phase" of the motor - hence the cam trigger to indicate more information. So basically the crank says "yo here is TDC" and the cam says "yup, here is #1 TDC"
Great explaination Jon.

They did run what they called 'semi-sequential' fuels on those motors for some time, a pair of drivers in the ECU; not too sure on the spark side though.

Man I can't wait to get where you are! I remember how cool it was to have the S52 working in the E30 for the first time but making it work off of an EMS I set up on my own is something I really look forward to!

BTW thanks for some of your explanatory posts (like about sequential injection and the different EMS units). Just letting you know that people do read every word.

Careful, FF sounds cool but all it really means is that your lens budget will have to be tripled, or more. Sure you can crop the pictures and hide the glass quality but that defeats the point of having a FF.

No worries I have the 16-35 F2.8 USM MKII, 70-200 F2.8 IS USM, 50mm F1.4, etc.

Thanks Ben - going to try those changes tomorrow and hopefully get her running again. I might also need to open the throttle body now that I don't have a million vacuum leaks!
