I came up with a drawing of the plate to move the shifter handle back. You could make it easily with 1.5" wide flat stock, which is only a couple bucks at Home Depot.

based on my research if someone can score a used TKO based Tremec trans you will have lots of options as this is setup for multiple shift locations... front, mid, and rear and apparently more. The rear setup looks like it would be darn near ideal for E36 fitment.
link to PDF w/ some of the conversion stuff http://www.ttcautomotive.com/english...150807_190.pdf (page 3) but a TKO over a T5 ads decent cost to the swap. Tremec boasts "Eight shifter locations available" w/ their TKO

I have a very important question! Is there an extra 3" of clearance between the intake manifold and the hood. I was doing some research on fox body 351w swaps and this would be the limiting factor to fit one in an E36.

I was thinking about this shifter rod - if you relocate the Mustang rod backwards, the end of the rod is going to be too close to you. If we want to make it look stock, why not go all the way and weld a rod to the back of that plate? The rod diameter and height should be the same as a stock BMW shifter. (If folks want it shorter, they can cut it.) Then you can use a correct-looking BMW knob and boot.
I think this is what I am going to do - can anyone measure their stock BMW shift rod diameter and height from the top of console? There is not 3" available - the hose on top of the throttle body barely touches the hood on my sedan with my Explorer intake. Lawson has a GT40 and plastic spacer on his coupe. One way you might make it fit would be to use a 94-95 Cobra upper intake. It is very low profile. A box intake might fit, but they kill your torque.

In my coupe I doubt theres a extra 3 inches of clearance between the intake manifold and the hood with the factery intake manifold. This weekend I will take some clay and put it between the highest point of my manifold and close my hood and see what I come up with. Thats a crazy motor to but in a e36 for sure. I'd go ahead with it. Don't let a little hood clearance stop you from swaping in a monster.

It may be doable with what they are saying here one of the options is exactly what Matt suggested.
If you're going with fuel injection, you only have a few manifold choices, according to Ed Marsh at Windsor-Fox Performance Engineering. You can use the FRPP GT-40 setup used on the Ford Lightning or the Lightning lower and a Cobra upper. Other options include Edelbrock's 351W truck lower (PN 3884) with a 5.0 passenger car upper (Performer PN 3822 or Performer RPM PN 7125), and Trick Flow's 351 EFI Manifold (PN 5150000-4), which includes the upper and lower (also available separately). Yes, the 351W truck upper will bolt up to the engine, but it's not a performance piece and hood clearance problems would be extreme, Ed explains. For racing purposes, Coast High Performance offers its 351W EFI Spyder intake, which is a four-barrel Victor Jr. manifold with 1/2-inch fuel rails and a 90-degree Power Elbow that accepts up to a 90mm throttle body. Here is the link with some pictures and more info: http://www.mustang50magazine.com/tec...wap/index.html Can you imagine this engine in an E36? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Strok...item56365c161c If this didnt fit if you wanted to get crazy they make a 302 based 400ci Dart short block good for 600hp on pump for $5600.
