How to identify the transmission type

Hi
I have a BMW e34 540i auto transmission and I want to swap it to manual transmission I know I need a Getrag S6S 420G gearbox, however I visited many bmw used parts store and I checked the gearboxes I couldn't find any label or writing on the gearbox with "Getrag S6S 420G" instead there are plenty of number on the gearbox like 1222 452 0 11 225, could any one help me how to make sure that a given gearbox is 6 speed Getrag S6S 420G or is there any place on the gearbox that is written Getrag S6S 420G. Thanx in advance

Here in the US we like to use a site called RealOEM.com. It really is a life saver! I took a couple seconds and plugged some generic info in that I thought would apply to your car. I assumed the car as a January 1994 build, Euro Model, Manual Trans, Left Hand drive. The manual trans that came up was the Getrag s6s 420g that you said it should be and the internal number that BMW uses for that part comes up as 23001222564. Check that site out and let me know if that helped you. Good luck and welcome to the forums!

Thanks alot dude for your help
But actually my problem is that in my home country there is no a BMW brand or any advanced store to go and purchase parts based on part #, however I have to go by myself and search each store. The problem is that on the transmission there is no any part # instead there are many other numbers, as you no a part number is a eleven number I think there should be a calculation to convert those numbers on the gearbox to the part # and see which is a Getrag S6S 420G. Thanx again
