i need an answer
im new to the whole bimmer thing and i just bought a 89 325i like 6 months ago and i wuz driving one day and when i got home i heard a knocking sound. I shut the car off took off the valve cover and there were two broken rocker arms. I pull the cams out and all the rocker arms off. My cam lobes are so worn down that there is almost .25 of an inch off. Should i buy a whole knew head or should i just replace the cam and the rocker arms? I am quite well educated on cars for a 16 year old but im not a genius. So if you could spare a few words for help that would be great.

very impressive, only 16 and already doing head work on the motor. Send the head out to get checked for warpage or cracks... while it's there and there is nothing wrong you can get it bored and honed. then reassemble with performance cams and new rocker arms.

sweet thanks. I am sure my dad could tell me if it is warped or cracked cuz he worked in a machine shop for a really long time and he's like super good with cars. Also if anyone knows what engine comes stock in a 89 325i. That would be great. Oh and also, is there anything i should look out for when buying parts from a junk yard such a head?

M20 engine. Timing Belt. Broken rockers - well, the belt probably snapped, and plunged the valves into the pistons. Pull the head, look for bent valves. ESPECIALLY if the belt's broken.
Cuz and wuz aren't words.

![]() M20B25 is the answer. You have an 'i' motor, watch out for M20B27 ('e' motors) because they look similar. When you replace your head, and if bmwdirtracer is correct (always is) it would be cheaper/easier to just replace. I've seen whole motors sell for a few hundred bucks so a head can't be that expensive. Google search e30tech, it is an invaluable resource for e30 owners. PS: I bought my first e30 when I was 16. I'm glad to hear e30's are still cooler than hondas with (at least some of) your crowd.

Picky, picky.
![]() I didn't think of it because the "e" isn't really a motor, it's an anchor. And '88 was the last year. An' don't be callin' me old, sonny --- If you don't slow down, you don't get old! Only those who can beat me on a race track get to call me old. And anyone who can beat me in the rain can call me anything he wants.![]() . And a great weekend to all!![]()

But, between the two motors, is the 327i. Take the 'e' block, and drop an 'i' head on it. You get the torque of the motor which dirtracer refers to as the "anchor", and the top end of the I motor. I love the torque of my 325e. Good highway car.
