Making BMW owners look bad

<rant>

I was at Otto's BMW in Ottawa Friday afternoon (Oct 30th) buying a trinket. At the parts counter was this big kid, early twenties I'd say, wearing some kind of boxing jacket. He was buying wiper blades for his e46. This kid was extremely loud and overbearing and couldn't shut up for one minute. He was arguing with the parts guy who, from the looks of him, has probably been at a parts counter longer than this kid has been out of diapers. The kid was loud, knew everything about cars and behaved exactly like a spoiled rich kid whose daddy has more money than brains.

Kid, if you're reading this forum, here are a few tips for you:

1. Nobody except your impressionable little "friends" give a crap about how much you know about cars. The guys at the parts counter didn't care, and the customers around you didn't care either. We were trying to ignore you for a reason. And you will get a lot of that from people if you don't calm down.

2. You don't know everything. As a matter of fact, if you don't know how to behave, then you are totally ignorant.

3. It doesn't matter how much money you or your daddy has. You're still a poor kid who hasn't got a clue. Until you learn humility, you will remain a poor slob.

4. Nobody cares how many BMW's you've owned. It doesn't make you special or important in any way. Get over it.

5. There is no amount of money that will buy class.

You are a walking stereotype. It's not a good stereotype. Stop it. Or at least sell your BMW and buy something else. Why don't you go buy that Escalade you were raving about to the parts guy. Put some 22" chrome wheels on it while you're at it. It will suit you well. Loud and overbearing. And like you said, it's so much better than the X5 anyway. And you should know, you know everything!

Good luck to you in life, kid. You're going to need it.

PS: Thanks for making me wait half an hour.

We need more details on the interaction between said kid and parts guy? Or else, you are being to sensitive to other people. In which case, you should grow a thicker skin. Doesn't sound like he was insulting you or anyone for that matter.

LOL! You're probably right. This kid got under my skin big time. The parts guys were exasperated. We had a good laugh afterwards.

Being of only 20 years old and assuming everyone has been 20 or so at some point. Most kids think they know everything. But if he was talking about an escalade he doesnt know one important thing. and that is how to read. Because im sure he missed the sign that said BMW the ultamate driveing machine. haha

I'm 20 and get the look of a spoiled rich kid. Most people dont bother to ask WHO paid for my car they just assume my dad gave it to me. Untill I show them all the paper work with only my name on it.... then they shut up.

I work my ass off to afford my car so I understand what to OP is ranting about.

Since when are you rich if you own an old e46?
And it didn't sound like he was that bad... maybe he was just having a bad day or was really frustrated with something

Well spoken. I wish I had your writing skills. Your philosophy on life shall be abundantly fruitful. Sorry if that sounds corny, but you have a real handle on approach to life.

BTW, next time that guy needs some help or a disc from parts dept, they will remember him and treat him very appropriately. (I love it.)

Op (standing behind young guy) had 50% to 90% of the interaction right in front of him face and ears. I suspect OP did not have time to elaborate us with the boring details. In fact, he provided a very succinct summary.

You are right; young guy was not insulting OP. OP did not claim he was. Look at the title of the thread--an excellent discription of the situation and the potential ensuing result(s).

There are behaviors and words that might not be insulting, but are still bold, brash, inappropriate, and embarrassing to those both in the immediate area and those might be included as part of the group (like BMW owners).

If OP runs for mayor, he has my vote.

In my opinion, OP has just the right thickness of skin.

1. OP recognized a situation that reflected poorly on others.
2. OP recognized how professionally the parts people and others in line handled themselves.
3. OP recognized how he should react in front of the people at the dealership and followed through with appropriateness.

These threads always piss me off..stories about kids driving bmw's and giving the older generation a bad name. Thats ridiculous..you guys act like you were never young and into nice cars. Just because when you were younger bmw's weren't as common amongst 18-24 drivers doesn't mean you have to make pointless threads about kids making bmw owners look bad. The kid could have easily owned a ford or dodge and been rude and disrespectful but since its a bmw OP reads deep into it and says its because he owns a bmw that he acted like he did.

Pointless thread imo-random occurrence which shouldn't mean anything to anyone, but unfortunately does

You are missing the point here. We were all young once and still enjoys nice cars, but that dosen't mean one should act like a jackass. Yeah, people do not care if you own a ford or dodge but they do care a bit more when you own a bmw. It's because of this perception, that it does mean something.

people act like jackasses all the time, the car they drive doesn't make a difference. And who really cares about the perception? Are you trying to be good for the people who have the mind set that bmw drivers are all idiots? **** those people, they're so not worth it.

Please do not put words into my mouth. You are again failing to understand the meaning of op. It's not what car they drive that is the issue, it's the perception. Yes, it doesn't have a basis in fact and I could care less what other people think if it weren't for the negative repercussions that do occur from these unfair perceptions. I have been on the receiving end of sometimes dangerous road rage because of my bimmer. This image has to change one way or another.

While there does need to be good customer service, there also should be some sort of standard customer manners.

I'd love to own a store or restaurant and go, "You know sir, you're an ass and we don't need your business that bad. Go away now because you are officially trespassing."

That's why I love where I work, my boss has the balls to fire customers if he sees fit to do so.
