Sounds more like a headunit model specific problem.. IE thats how it was designed to fit.
Most aftermarket head units stick past the cage to some degree or another. Ever seen a Nak CD-700? lol.... Its a diving board.. but it sounds very nice.

What kind of radio is it? It should not stick out much more than OEM as said.
