    Re

I will have to modify the sunroof motor cover in order to fit it in there or find the part number of that E36 bulky trim panel that mounts in there.

Does the reverse wire provide ground (-) or power (+)?

Not sure what the reverse wire does, but it kills the autodimming function, not sure quite how, electrically.

I doubt you'll find the PN for the trim panel - I've never seen it in the parts system.

The UGDO is massive and deep - there is very little place to mount it up there.

From what I've read online, the reverse wire should be a 12v positive.

Yep the reverse signal is just a switched 12v+ . When the trans goes into reverse, it closes the reverse switch, and the backup lights come on. Nothing fancy.

So you could tap the normally open side of the reverse switch or anywhere on the wires the go to the reverse lights, or you could install a manual 12V switch to do the same thing.
No matter where you go, there you are...

Wish I had the panel you just sold recently.
I will try to communicate with a parts salesman and see if he can find the p/n for the trim panel or will do it somehow myself with plastic panels and bonding epoxy. Not sure how stretchy that fabric is, fabric that covers the sunroof motor cover, if it stretches I can try and make extra space under so the remote will fit.

It is funny I have located the reverse wire years ago when mounting BMW Traffic Pro, it is located under the driver's side footrest area, think it was blue with yellow stripe. Since then did not remember was it 12V or ground and have tested the autodim mirror reverse requires 12V, thanks for confirming this.

How difficult is to remove the mirror and a pillar cover?

Yeah, the wire on the retrofit harness for reverse-cancel is indeed blue/yellow. Should be nice and simple, then.

Good to know! What was the PN you used to order your retrofit harness (since you ordered one for a car with alarm, yes)?

Interesting - my harness was "pre-made" for me. Oh well.

    Hey,
I just ordered a brand new one of these mirrors. I've just had a look at my roof though and because I don't have a sunroof there's no 'easy access' panel up there...Does that mean I have to take off the whole roof? Please say no.

    thanks seans m3.

Cataldo all you have to do is unscrew the front visors and their anchors and the head liner will hang in the front.

Thats what I did since I ran my wires down the pass a piller. Its been quite a lil tear down on my part. I pulled my glove box to replace my cabin filter & have since installed an OEM OBDII alarm w/parking light flash mod, front speakers, rear view mirror with home-link, & am in the middle of installing the wiring for the headlight aiming.

Ok so I got my mirror. Forgot to order the one with the homelink
I tried just plugging the thing in and the compass seemed to work, didn't check the autodim but my keyless entry didn't work. I figure I gotta do some mucking around. Crapped myself when I locked the car with my key then the car wouldn't open again for some reason. Luckily when you open the boot it opens all doors.

Mind having a look at this pdf...May have ordered the wrong one? It says

These installation instructions are only valid for cars without SA 875 (infrared remote control).

    http://bigpatsfans.com/mirror/pics/01_29_0_028_299.pdf
    My P/N for the mirror is 51 16 0 028 301

    bahhhh.

btw, reason why I didn't get the part number specified here was because I'm an aussie and apparently we got a different frequency here. Gaahhhh!

I would check US eBay - I doubt you'll find them for cheap anywhere else.

Great....I've ordered the wrong one again.... This time 51169174309
Is the radio receiver for the keyless entry apart of the mirror or do I have to put my module from my old mirror in to it or something? Baaaahhhhh! Can't get the keyless entry going....Homelink works a treat though...

Thats hard to say cause the US Version (at least the E36) doesnt use the mirror for the alarm trasmitter. Thats in the brain of the alarm (black box) behind the glove box (again, US model. UK will be under steering)

    Right,
I got a Euro spec in case you're wondering. Hmmm...So if it doesn't use the mirror, why would it stop working when I disconnect the mirror?

I figured since your in Australia. Not sure if the euros have a different set up. You'd have to contact the dealer to verify this.
