1991 - 1999 (E36) (1991 - 1999) The first modern 3 Series, the E36, was the model that paved the way for the 3 Series to be named "Car of the Year" every year since the model was driving off showroom floors. Radically redesigned in 1992, the E36 was not the same 3 Series as the E21 and E30. Larger, less boxy in design, and equipped with a dual overhead cam engine, multilink rear suspension, and a more finished interior, the E36 balances sport with luxury.

nitrogen doesn't have moisture. moisture causes higher fluctuation in pressure with temperature.

so the expansion rate is not different per se. nitrogen is more consistent with temperature because the moisture content is zero. where as the expansion rate [ie pressure] of air varies with relative humidity.

Results are in from a sucessful weekend even with saturdays rain.

Car ran like a champion. Rain driving on semi slicks was very loose and intersting to say the least. After getting adjusted to the handling of the tires in the wet my 2nd session passed about 9 people. Full throttle in 4th would spin the tires if i rolled the pedal to fast. I would have loved to have street tires on saturday.

Sunday

1st session track was slightly wet from the downpour at 5-8am so I drove cautious and had some fun warming up the tires. 2nd run track was dry and allowed me to pass just about about 17 -20 cars 2 and 3 at a time on the straightaways and parallel straights.
3rd run tried to sneak a passenger out on the track and made 2 laps till black flag. Ejected my passenger and back out. It started raining so i backed off slightly to be safe.
4th and final run they let me out 1st. Used my warm up lap to start heating up the tires. At the start the next car was 100yds behind me and that was the last I saw of him or anyone till my 3rd or 4th lap when I caught the last car. I took him on the front straight and was baking into turn 3 just before braking in 4th at 6800 rpm something broke. I thought the engine poped because of all the debris hitting the bottom of the car. But the engine was still running and there was no smoke. Power steering was out so I quick turned off the track to the back nascar straight. Belt took out the fan and a radiator hose. Ill post the pic in a little bit. I finally got the belt off and got a go signal from the corner workers at the carousel and hauled ass back to the pits without overheating.

Day was over.

The new alignment settings worked very well, were very usable and having the rear sway bar in made the car much more ballanced.

Funny about the passenger!! At least he had a few good laps at speed, I bet that was fun.

Well, time to get an electric fan.

took off the carnage from the belt decentegrating and found I also lost my radiator...

So the damage is radiator, belt and engine fan so far.

That fan blade was just replaced too... damnit

Next weekend is eagles canyon again for NASA-Pro this time and I need to get the car going with the quickness. I might just slap a stock radiator back into it with a new pull E36 race electric fan. It will be ready for next weekend that way. The Bimmerworld radiator will be a good upgrade that can be done next time or before the start of the next season.

Any one tried the electric pull type fans yet and ditched the engine fan?

New radiator installed, engine fan removed, 1 half a quart of antifreeze and one bottle of water wetter. There is a good ammount of air coming thru from the electric stock fan, but with the 3 inch gap from the condenser being removed its not going to do well in traffic. I am going to pop the front end off and mount that thing inside and run it backwards so it is a pull fan. It will be easier to flush mount it on the radiator face and make some brackets to hold it there.

oil changed from royal purple 10-40 to mobile one 15-50 since we were low on the royal...I was more worried about a clean filter, even though the oil smelled burnt after 500 miles.

I got crafty and found some engine paint that was what seemed a close match of red and painted the side skirts, and rear bumper areas. I also did the sunroof...

Once it dried it was a bit darker red. But its ok, it looks way better without the grey. Plus its enamel paint so it dries shiny. Once i get road grime on it again you wont be able to tell the difference :P

2 dry runs and 1 wet run. On the wet track with rain, i went off the front straight at 120 into turn 1. I realized at a certain point i forgot the track was wet and should have already been on the brakes...oops!

got on the brakes and started aiming for turnin to turn 2 ....back on the gas so the ass wasnt too light, as soon as I touched the gas pedal the ass end slung out on me....I had too much speed for that wet track...

But I didnt spin off, dont know how i reacted so fast, I just spun the wheel and carried the speed in the form of a drift....I still am trying to play it back in my head and figure out how the heck I pulled it off. I was doing about 85 into turn 2...wet track on semi slicks

I think its from all the rain auto-x and sliding the car around and between cones.

I wish there would have been a in car camera for that shit, it was awesome. But I dont want to have to do that again!

I will definatly be getting some rims for my rain tires real soon...Jordan you will be getting a call for some of those scratched and chipped 16" rims your boss told me about.

I started overheating again in my 1st session. I got off track really quick and killed it. I dont know where the leak was coming from, but i think it was from the plug in the side of the new radiator where that sensor screws into it. I just left that plug in it that comes with the new radiators. But I put a wrench on it and was able to get 1/2 a turn out of it. I will put the sensor in on monday. I re-bled it and topped it off before my 2nd run. No other heat or leak issues.

Finally

Finally I had some spare time to finish the roof. I was able to grind the nasty looking weld down and bondo everything nice and smooth. It took a good 6 hours of detaled work but the end result was worth it!

check out the pics

Then after I got paint on it I could then see the areas that need to be touched up again and resanded. When I finish it will almost look like it never had a sunroof.

A continuation of http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...postcount=172:

During the testing at Zach's shop a few months ago, I mentioned (above link) in the TB test, that we could measure a difference of KPA pressure by only moving the elbow/pipe/filter (from horizontal to vertical). This is important, as it shows us the OBD I TB's rod location is a restriction to flow, and why the OBD II TB was designed with a vertical rod.

The difference was 0.29 psi (atmospheric pressure), if I calculated that correctly. As Zach pointed out, the dyno showed a 5% gain through most of the power band with a change of 2rwhp at peak.

For 1/4 mile weather condition correction, if we were to say a 14.0 1/4 mile and make this atmospheric pressure correction, its equal to 1/10th faster in the 1/4 mile.

Finally, the overheating issue has been tackled! Too much timing. I was at MSR Houston and overheated, I replaced the water pump, thermostat, remounted the electric fan right up to the radiator, pulled a vacuum on the cooling system when filling it. You name it i tried it. Overheated at least 13 times maybe 18. Not sure. A few times it was baking hot too....besides the point.

I thought about my friends Miata overheating from too much timing. So sunday morning I decided to pull 4 degrees from the entire map and add back what I took in the idle area.

1st session out, I slowly started to ass rape the car, more and more, harder slides, faster corner speeds. Until I was 4 wheel sliding the carousel at 6500. No more overheating!!!

2 more sessions proved the same.

TWS Next weekend since I don't have the funds for NASA this weekend....

But Toyo Proxies RA-1 staggered fitment will be my friend next weekend. 225-45-16 and 245-45-16. I hope to see 1:54 minute laps with full power available and good grip!

The car was able to catch and pass the Spec Miata's running this weekend, making up distance in the turns, and then running away in the straights.

I havent had that much fun in the car since I cant remember!

I am getting my hands on a 95 325is block bored 20 over, with 20 over JE pistons and a 330 crank and rods for my next bottom end. S52 cams in a S52 head with pocket porting and multi-angle radius valve job.

That will be just under a 3.1l running obd1. I hope it will make 260+ wheel. I have 220 wheel as a 2.8 with 180k on the head. Seems reasonable, but only time will tell.

Not 100% the combination of 330 crank and rods will work with 20 over m50b25 84mm JE pistons.

To solve the problem, I am getting the machinist to fit the crank rods and pistons into the block, sending over my spare S52 head for fitment and compression calculation. I figured that was the best way to figure it out.

Pictures from the event

I would say those falcon tires are holding damn well...but look at the sidewalls rolling

you can see it better on this angle

They could hold 80 in the carousel which was good for me, and faster then the spec miatas were doing.

That is 75-80 there, i was faster without the passengers weight on the outside of the car.

Auto-X sunday with BMW-CCA at the HPA. putting the toyo ra-1's on tonight for that event, looking forward to seeing how those tires slide and recover.
