"What happened to your 300 horses man?" (long and somewhat detailed)

So I'm walking out of the local Target with a shopping cart full of assorted necessity's when an old friend from High School drives up in his 1994-2004 Mustang GT and says hi.

He follows me to my car and parks next to me and we talk. He asks me a few questions of my baby and I ask him a few about his and we get into a debate into who's is better...just like old times.

He claims to have ~300hp and he can ALWAYS win in a drag, but I would rape him in the corners, which sounds about right...right?

After talking for a bit I say bye and head out. A little bit later I see him in my rear view and could hear his straight pipes clearly. We both turn into this one road which is always empty and he pulls up next to me.

him: "Wanna race a lil'?"

me: "uhhh....OK?"

So we match speeds to about 30mph and he honks 3 times and we take off.

We're side by side all the way to like 80mph then amazingly I start to pull lengths on him...rather quickly too.

WTF? I'm pulling lengths on him? What happened to "I always win the drag races...you the corners"???

After Its clear I won I slow down and he pulls up and the look on his face is nothing short of depression with a mix of embarrassment. A full roundhouse kick to the face!

"You beat me? I was flooring it!"

Me with a big ass smile because even I was surprised...my 240hp M3 beat a 300hp Mustang in a drag race. YAY!

After that we race again but from a light. At first he seems like hes pulling away but then I catch up and pull on him and end up winning again. Holy shit?

After that we ended up going our separate ways...

Best bang for the buck mod on a 'stang is gears. I've seen people drop almost a second off their times with 4.10s, myself being one of them.

And plus roasting 1st, 2nd, and if you're lucky, 3rd is always fun.

wouldn't adding 4.10's lower your top speed? op said he started to pull on him up top

It would lower your top speed, but in turn you would get to your new top speed much quicker. Top speed with 4.10 gears for a GT Stang would probably be 130-140mph.

Actually the new mustang GTs have 315hp at the crank for 2010. Even the 2009's had 300hp. The 99-04 ones had 260hp...

I wouldn't expect you pull many lengths anywhere, especially if he has headers/exhaust. Your cars should be very similar, his car just has a lot of torque on the hit and has longer gears.

Yep that's the one. The E36 M3 is a real good match for the 99-04 5spd V8 stang. Both cars are moderately quick, but no match for your car as you know.
